Clearance Shopping Tip #7:

January is the only month where you will find clearance and sale prices on just about everything. But each month has specific things that retailers are looking to get rid of. January is no exception. So what types of items are “seasonally” put on sale or clearance for January?

  • Furniture (Between Martin Luther King Jr. Day and President’s Day is when you will see the biggest sales. And of course, stores have tons of clearance furniture right now too.)
  • Toys (Clearance from the Holidays)
  • Bed & Bath Linens (This is the time of year to find sales and deals.. and even clearance on Bed and Bath items)
  • Gift Sets (Everything that is left over from the Holidays will get marked down. Bath & Body Sets, Food Gifts and more.)
  • Exercise Equipment (Want a treadmill? This is a great time of year to get it on sale. And since they don’t typically go on clearance at regular stores, a sale price is the best way to save money.)
  • Vacations! (I can’t begin to tell you how many deals I am seeing on airfare, cruises and vacations right now. January/February are the best times of the year to book those vacations… and traveling this time of year is usually low-season for a lot of popular travel destinations.)

In my book, “Create Your Own Money-Saving Adventure”, I have the rest of the months spelled out for you and what things you should be purchasing each month. And for all of you new readers out there, I created this book to help people get started with saving money, getting out of debt, raising credit scores and learning how to coupon or Price Match at the grocery store. It’s over on Amazon if you are interested and want help getting your finances in order. Just a little plug…. 🙂

  1. Dont buy things just because its a great deal. If you dont have a need or a use/purpose for it, it can end up being clutter or a waste of money.

  2. I definitely pick up toys for upcoming birthday parties when it’s clearance times. Sometimes I can find toys in unlikely stores…Home Goods, grocery store, and drugstores.

  3. I don’t always trust the clearance sticker prices. I price check products to find better deals. 🙂

  4. Check stores like CVS for after Christmas clearance items that are as useful year-round gifts or at home use. I got a microwave popcorn popper at 90% off for only 1.99!

  7. While most of us clearance shop after holidays/seasons and on the fly, it is good to know what typically goes on sale each month to help with your long term planning.

  9. When buying for a “gift closet, ” look for more than great deals. Stock it with items that you like and that your and your family can actually use, should you have no need to gift those items. That goes for toys! Lots of the clearance toys are character-branded or “dated” in some way. If you don’t have a specific use or recipient (who will just LOVE it) in mind, it is best to buy more “classic” toys (i.e., plain old Monopoly rather than Kung Fu Panda 6 Monopoly) or toys that your own children would love (in case they become the recipients!).

  10. I love that section in your book that talks about what you should look for each month! I don’t have any tips to add to that – just that in your book, that was definitely a new-information section for me, since I never really paid attention to that before!

  11. What a great time to use the Toy Clearance deals to start a stock pile. If you don’t have anyone in mind, then you can use those items next year for a family that may be in need. The gift sets are great for this also. Love that Clearance doesn’t always have to be just for you and your friends and family but can make it affordable to give service in our communities!!

  12. I knew all the clearance tips except for the vacation. I didn’t know vacation trips went on sale this time of year!! Bummer we don’t have enough saved up for our summer trip yet to start buying/reserving things!

  13. For clearance appliances I always shop at Home Depot right around the end of November to the first couple of weeks in December. They clearance all of last years models and usually throw in an extra 20% off! We got a double LG range oven in stainless steel for $700 and our 36 cu ft french door stainless refrigerator with water in the door for $1,400 and they have all the bells and whistles. You are literally buying the floor models and they are so cheap!
