There are so many “deals” that pop up for Back-to-School. But what prices are really a great deal??? It can be so overwhelming if you aren’t keeping track of past years or if you are brand new to saving money. So I’ve put together a list of my personal price points when it comes to Back-to-School items… just so you guys have a good place to start when you are out shopping for your kids.
- Never pay more than $.25 a box for Crayola Crayons. (You can get them even cheaper with a coupon, in-store offer or mobile app discount) A great sale price is $.50, if you don’t want to wait around for the $.25 off deal that pops up.
- Never pay more than $.02 for 2-Pocket Folders ($.10 is a decent price too–and a deal we see often as well.)
- Never pay more than $.17 for 1 Subject Notebooks
- Never pay more than $.25 per Sharpie Marker
- Never pay more than $10-$12 for a Backpack (even the Character ones) Office Max will even do a FREE Backpack promotion each year. (Last year it was $.01) You will pay for the backpack you choose and get back the full amount in MaxPerks Rewards. It’s a rewards check you can use to purchase anything else at Office Max.
- Never pay more than $.39 for School Glue (Elmer’s or a store brand)
- Never pay more than $.31 per Washable Glue Stick
- Never pay more than $1.00 for an 8 Pack of Washable Markers (You can get these for even less with a coupon though.)
- Never pay more than $.25 for a roll of Scotch Tape (Each year we have been able to get it for FREE after coupons. So watch for those opportunities. I stock up to have a lot on hand for Christmas to wrap presents!)
- Never pay more than $.97 for a 12 Pack of Crayola Colored Pencils (You can get these even cheaper with a coupon though.)
Each year, I put together a list of the BEST Back-to-School Deals every week while the sales are in full swing. If you want to see the current deals, you can head to my Back-to-School Category here at any time. ENJOY!!
**For future reference, you can re-pin this post here. Then you can remember these prices for next year too!

What about dry erase markers?
Leslie
Also, what about copy paper and erasers?
Wendy
What’s a good price for the twistable crayons and colored pencils?
Shauna
Thank you for this. I have been meaning to sit down and compare prices and figure out what I should be spending. Thank you so much for saving me the time.
Nikki
I have 2 questions. First, are these prices without the use of any coupons? And second, when you do mention coupons, where are you getting them from? Thanks for this.
Mindi Nazarinia
What about binders like the 1″ or 3″
Angela
Thank you so much for this list! I also price-match at Walmart for some of these. I had a hard time finding the Washable Markers for less than $2 suggestions for what store to look for? Where to find Crayola coupons? Finally, what about backpack quality? I’m going to need a nicer, bigger one for a middle schooler!!

Yep, Price Matching is great! Not all of the deals will be available right now. So you will have to wait over the next few weeks and watch for when they do. It’s still pretty early for BTS deals. Crayola coupons typically show up on Coupons.com. If I see them, I will definitely post and let you know. And for Backpacks, hopefully some of the other Moms can give you an idea for quality. I’m still on Character Backpacks. 😉
Melissa
Is there a link to Back to School sales somewhere? I tried the banner on the side but it didn’t work..
Melea Johnson
Hey Melissa, The banner on the sidebar worked for me. So I’m not sure what was wrong earlier. Here you go! https://freebies2deals.com/category/back-to-school

Something nice to get into while time goes by.

Right now my local Walmart (in St. George) has the 8-pack Crayola washable markers on sale for $0.50! Hopefully others do too.
Thanks for putting this together Melea!

Dry Erase markers are by far the most expensive thing on my list. I need the fine point ones which makes it hard to find deals on. Any advice?
