how to clean out your closet and make serious cash

Did you know you could make money from Spring Cleaning?? You can even turn your unwanted fashions into a fortune online! That is why I wanted to introduce you to a few awesome places to sell any clothing you may not want anymore, or that your kids have grown out of.

clean out your closet and make cash

I have to admit, I usually just give everything to Deseret Industries.  (It’s like a Goodwill in our area.) But after literally cleaning out half of my closet this past weekend, (six huge trash bags full!) I knew that I had a lot of items I could probably make some good cash on.

Not only can you sell gently used clothing, accessories, purses and shoes, but you can also sell gently used kid’s clothing on sites like thredUP.

I know there are a lot of consignment stores in my area, but I love the idea of having it all online and saving myself some time.  If I want to list items for sale at Midnight, I can because the website is always open.  Some places you can list your own price and share a cut of the profits or the website will price and list your item for you.  Or you can mail in everything and they will inspect and price it all for you.  Lots of different options.  And with my experiences so far, it’s a seriously great way to earn extra cash!

TIP:  No matter who you sell your items to, make sure you are selling in-season items.  If you have items from your closet that are Winter or Fall items, they won’t sell now and a lot of stores won’t even buy them.  Put those items away until we get to August.  Then you can pull them out and sell those to get top dollar.

Tradesy:  I’ve actually used this a couple times before.  This site is mainly for any designer items you have.  So think of Designer Jeans, Purses and Shoes!  You can sell items and purchase items through this site.

How it Works:

  • Create an Account.
  • Then take pictures of the item you want to list and upload them to “Sell”. You can choose your own listing price but they will give you suggestions on what prices typically sell for that particular item.
  • You can opt to ship the item yourself or have them send you a pre-paid envelope to ship the item. (The Buyer pays for shipping.) best site for selling designer items online
  • Tradesy takes 9% of your commission if you keep your balance on Tradesy to buy other products.  Or if you want to cash out to Paypal or your checking account, Tradesy will take 11.9%.  (BTW- This is the lowest commission percentage.  A lot of them take 20%-30%!)

thredUP:  You can order a Clean Out Bag and fill it with Women’s, Junior’s and Kid’s Clothing and mail it in for FREE. thredUP will analyze your items and will give you up to 80% of the resale value.

What to Do:

sell unwanted clothing online

  • Check the Clothing Calculator to see how much you can get for different items you are thinking about sending in. You might also want to check their Quality Standards to see what kinds of clothing they will and won’t accept.
  • AND- don’t forget to look at the list of brands they DO NOT accept.  There are some popular ones.
  • Once you have done that, fill up your Clean Out Bag and mail it in. Don’t forget to activate your bag so they know which account the bag is linked to!
  • Items they don’t accept they will donate on your behalf to Charitable Partners. Or you can request that they ship them back to you. But it will cost $12.99 to do so.  (That’s why you will want to follow the earlier steps to make sure they do accept your items.)

  • If you want to sell items, clean out items from your closet that are less than 5 years old, an accepted brand and in good condition. And request a FREE Shipping Kit to mail in your items.
  • Before you mail in your items, check their Payout Calculator to make sure the brand is accepted AND you like the amount of money they will pay you for it.

All shipping fees are taken care of by Poshmark as well.  You can even have online Parties with your friends to buy, list and browse each other’s closets!  You’ll see everything from high-end items down to items under $15.

How to Get Started:

Don’t forget that all of these places I’ve mentioned also SELL items at a huge discount!  So if you have ever wanted a Designer Purse, a pair of Designer Shoes or just new clothes for your kids at a huge discount, this is how to save a ton of money on them.  So even if you don’t have items to sell, you can still find great deals on items to purchase.

  1. I use Thred up and have never had any problem with them, they tend to be kinda picky but it makes sense why they would be. But I am excited to try the others listed! Thank you do the post!

  2. Please consider giving to big brothers big sisters or the homeless shelters. They are always in need and always so appreciative!

  3. I would love to know which one of these you, or readers, would recommend for pre-teen clothes. My daughter has gotten SO picky lately and I have a TON to sell. I haven’t tried any of these before. I really appreciate this post. Super helpful! Thank you!

  4. Great post thanks! Are any of these sites good for selling men’s business attire?

    • Men’s is much harder. If you search online there are a few that do accept Men’s attire. So I would do that. I haven’t sold any of my husband’s stuff yet. So I’m not sure which one is the best.

  5. I had an awful experience with selling to thredUp and I will now only purchase from them. I sent them a $124 JCrew skirt new with tags only a year old and in perfect condition, they didn’t accept it and after contacting them, they told me they donated it, which is what they do with any unaccepted items. They also told me me that it was not in style even though I produced a picture of the EXACT skirt they were currently selling. Terrible customer service. I’ve recently switched over to Twice and I’m so much more happy with their quality and customer service.

    • Thanks for sharing your experience- I was just considering selling to ThredUp, but have a lot of new with tag items. Have you tried selling with Twice yet? How did that go if so?

      • I’m in the middle of Twice right now… So I’m not sure yet. You might want to try a site that will let you list your own price, if you still have tags on them.

        • I have actually sold to twice and I was a bit surprised on some things they did not accept. However they will send you their price to you and you have the option of accepting it or denying it. If you choose to deny it , you can get your close back for $4.95. If you sell it they send the unwanted clothes to a goodwill. I think for about 9 items I received about $50 ish. I used the in store credit to receive 25% off. I have bought a ton from them and the clothes are like new. In fact several items still have tags on them !! I have been very pleased. I believe you can get 50% off your first order. And they always email coupons or offer 20-25% off. I downloaded the app and it is so easy!! I love it!

  7. Have you tried swaps on FB? It’s like craigslist only on FB and you can leave the item on your porch and have it picked up. They usually have it by city. I’ve sold a few things that I would normally just toss and donate. It great for ANYTHING. Like those household items you never use 🙂
