  283. we live in south Louisiana and refer to ours as a “hurricane stash”, because that’s the typical emergency situation that necessitates a non-perishable food stockpile in our area. where we live, evacuation is never a worry, but extended power outages are. we keep our “stash” year-round, just in case, and we make an effort to have good variety (Mexican, Italian, Asian, Greek, German, etc.) in the mix, because after being stuck in a sweltering hot house with no electricty and therefore no AC for days or even weeks, eating the same dinky food day after day just makes it all that much more frustrating. we need to work on our stash now that we’re past the worst of hurricane season, though. some of it is outdated at this point. need to get rid of that and start rebuilding it, bit by bit…a little each shopping trip so it’s not so overwhelming all at once. i’ve never tried one of these kit type things but would really love to!!

  331. We have our 72 hour kits started. We have been adding stuff every month that we have extra money. We recently moved though and haven’t had any extra money for a couple months so our 72 hour kits are kind of being put on hold. Yikes. We just had to eat the food out of it though during conference because they recommend rotating the food every 6 months. But with this Family Storehouse 72 hour kit food supply it looks like I wouldn’t have to change out the food for awhile. That would be really nice. I don’t have a lot of food storage either but I try and buy a couple extra cans every time I go to the store. I have definitely felt the need to work harder on it though. It is so important!

I started our 72 hour kits several years ago and went through them recently…all clothes were too small (for ALL of us!), we ate the goodies that were still good and threw away the crumbling chocolate and suckers that had turned gooey. Needless to say, I have yet to fill those up again. Yes, it is pricey and does take some doing…sigh.

I guess being young and a partime mom is hard with no experience to go by other than the emergency kit my mom put together for me when I was in grade school which had numbers and photos lol I somehow doubt that, those items would cut it if I had to be the adult in an emergency situation.

  915. The entire reason why I started collecting and sending away for freebies/giveaways was with the intention of saving them up for prepping. That is how I found you guys. 🙂 Deodorant, shampoo, soap, first aid supplies, cleaning products, pet food, morale boosters, etc. are all in bins in the closet organized for different situations. My boyfriend is very much into prepping but for the last year or two we are still in our beginning stages since we are college students and can’t afford to invest in the big stuff yet. This is the cheapest way for us to obtain little things here and there for emergencies. I’ve become quite good at it lol. 🙂

So in a way, yes, we have other necessities but not a food supply! We started collecting rice for about a year but made a big mistake by not storing it in the proper container to keep it safe. Sure enough we had a little mouse problem on our 2nd floor apartment (no idea how he got in there as it is so clean!) and he trashed our rice supply. Little booger. Now we have to start over.

1024. When I was young, I grew up on a farm and there were many winters that we would get snowed in and were forced to use food storage for two or three days untill the power would come back on and the wind storms subsided. In my young married years I always thought money was too tight to spend on a planned Food Storage. Now that I’m in a position where two of my daughters (single moms) have moved back into my home, I realize that it is a definate need. I have enough food storage to last maybe a couple of weeks of good eating, after that it might be tuna and mac and cheese for a few meals. HA ~ I do realize the importance and need to make a purchase plan to get things in order. Thank you for the hint !!!!

A complete meal in a bag for example Clam Chowder, Beef Stew, Hawaiian Haystacks etc. These meals can be made in 10 minutes and are the meals we already have been used to eating. I put them in a stiff plastic gift bag, with the recipe typed and slid into a cd protector stuck on the front of the bag. I realized we make about 4 meals a week for my family of 4 so I times that by 52 weeks and I made 208 “Meals in a Bag” for my year supply. It makes the best wedding gifts, baby shower gifts, or gift to someone that just needs a meal!

I have always had lots of emergency supplies, pet and human supplies, first aid supplies, etc.(except gasoline for the generator). I don’t have a “kit” yet. we love camping, so we have items to help with primitive food prep. Winter’s coming, so we expect blizzards and freezing rain, which equals downed power lines and cold. Here in the country, we expect at least 3 days without electricity.

1334. I used to have a 72 hr kit, but let it go to waste because I tucked it under my bed and forgot about it. Now if a crisis hit I would be in a world of hurt. I just love the kit that Family Storehouse has put together. I hope this giveaway gets the word out to families on the opportunities they have to get started on their food storage. I know it seems like a heavy load or costly, but taking it one day at a time and with fabulous insight (thanks Freebies2Deal) it makes it very managable.

1488. I add to my food storage when there’s a great sale. If you’re not sure how much food you need for a specific time period (say 1 year), mark the last can of that specific product (at the back of your shelf) with a piece of masking tape. Write the number of cans you originally bought and the date. When you finally get to that last can, you’ll know how long it took to use up that number of cans by comparing the purchase date noted and the current date. Also, don’t forget 72 hour kits for pets (food, treats, bottled water…)

1507. We do have some food storage, I think its about at least a month supply, maybe more if I really stretched it. I have 8 total in my family, 6 kids & my husband and I. We don’t have 72 hour kits, I don’t really know what would go in them or where I would actually put them. Although, yesterday I was helping a family friend pack and they had 72 hour kits in backpacks & I thought that was really neat. Since my husband’s job does have frequent lay-offs where they don’t work for a few weeks every couple of months, there have been times where I rely solely on what we have in our food storage. My problem is keeping it in stock. We homemake everything pretty much that we eat and so I go through alot of what we have. I did buy our first wheat bucket from walmart, I was all sorts of happy! 🙂 I know I have a long ways to go to get as much wheat as we need for each person and everything, but we always have bought flour in the 10 yrs. we have been married. It made me feel good to get actual wheat & my parents got me a hand wheat grinder for my birthday this year! So we are making slow progress, but we are doing it! 🙂 awesome giveaway btw! 🙂

That is what everyone else did as well and everything was gone. Then the next week you came out with the post for a 72 hour kit.
