On top of everyone else you are getting presents for… don’t forget to tip! Two very important people to tip are your Newspaper Carrier and your UPS Delivery Guy/Mailman. And, there could be other people you should consider gifting or tipping too like Daycare Services, Pet Caretakers and even your Hair Stylist.
Newspaper Carrier Tips
If you are getting a Sunday only, or a weekend subscription- like most of us are. A tip of anywhere from $10-$30 would be appropriate.
To determine how much you would like to tip, think about a few things:
– Do my papers always arrive on time and without damage?
– Has the carrier had to deliver in inclement weather multiple times?
If you have had problems with receiving your paper on time, or not getting it at all. Leave a tip with a note kindly explaining the importance of getting
your paper. If they know they are likely to receive a tip from you in the future, you can bet they will work harder and making sure you are taking care of.
You should receive a letter or an envelope from your newspaper carrier sometime soon- if you haven’t already. They will normally have an address to
send a tip to. If they don’t, you can call up your newspaper company and ask for an address to send a tip to or add it to your bill instead.
Remember that our newspaper carriers get up when it is still dark, brave the cold, rain and snow to get us our newspapers so we can have our coupons! So, if you choose to tip anyone this Holiday season, it should be your Newspaper Carrier!

My husband was a carrier for 4 years, pulling two jobs. My husband would be given around 40 bucks and then others would give gifts, they had given him 2 liters of soda, popcorn and movies mostly. He delivered over 300 papers and only received items from about 15 customers, so it is true that people tend to forget some of the very hard working people this time of year.

What do you do when your carrier either doesn’t bring your papers, only leaves 1 of the 4, or throws your papers out the window as they drive by? (think of the mail man on “Funny Farm”, seriously!) Every week it seems like we either don’t get them, the kids have to fish them out of a puddle, or this past Sunday, a snow bank? Don’t think of me as stingy, I’m all for tipping good service, but I have a hard time rewarding someone those kinds of things.

Erin i have the same trouble with my carrier the last month and a half, i have had to call the agency for my papers 3 out of 4 weeks on sundays in November. Maybe just a Christmas card saying Thank you and Merry Christmas? Melea…What’s your thoughts on these type of carriers?

That’s funny Erin! I just started getting the weekend paper, so far I have had to call 2 out of 4 Sunday’s for my paper. Then, to top it off, I had NO coupons in my Deseret News this week. By then, after I had waited an hour for the paper, I wasn’t about to call back for my coupons!!!

It is the responsibility of the carrier to deliver the paper. Keep calling. My paper penalizes me if there are complaints. If there are a lot of complaints, they will look for a new carrier. That is how I got both of my routes. They had too many complaints. Call and complain. You pay for your paper, you should get it, and if it is a door step delivery route, they need to get it on your doorstep. At least I feel that I need to do so. I do my best to keep my customers happy, and I give them my phone number, so they can call me if there is ever a problem.

I get my mail delivered to my door, and I was wondering about tipping. But the last 2 months it hasn’t been a consistent person, the mail lady that used to come everyday now comes maybe 2 of the 6 days, then a guy will come a few and another guy a few. What do I do?

Please be mindful that the mail carrier are NOT ALLOWED to accept cash from customers. It is against their corporate policy. However, they usually will take it when given. 😉 My mom has been a carrier for 25 years and they have memo that goes out every year reminding the carriers not to accept cash. Gift cards are a better choice. Just a heads up. 🙂

Thank you for remembering the newspaper carriers. Our family has done a route for many years and while the summer months are fun, the cold and icy winter months are not so much fun, especially getting stuck in the snow at 4:00 in the morning.
