If you live in Utah, get ready for a few changes at Target stores. They are using us as another test market with how they mark clearance merchandise.
Currently, you can see markdowns as much as 75%-90% off in different departments. But from now on, we will no longer see discounts past the 50% off mark in the Toy, Kids Clothing, Men, Women, or Juniors Clothing Departments.
And as far as Seasonal Merchandise goes.. like Halloween Clearance, each store will vary how they do their Clearance depending on how fast items sell out. Although most will probably keep it at 50% off and won’t go more than that. All un-sold items will be donated to different organizations
So, why am I telling you this? A few reasons:
- You might want to head to Target this week and grab those clearance clothing items that are currently marked 75% off or more. Depending on how this testing period goes, it might be until April that we see anything different.
- In case you wait for the 75% off and 90% off sales on Clothing and Holiday Clearance, you will know that they won’t be clearancing futher and to purchase at 50% off instead.
As always, you guys might want to double check with your store. This is something new that is just rolling out. So all stores may not be briefed on it yet. But, we will have to see over the next few months how they clearance things.
I’m worried about the Christmas Toy Clearances they usually do after Christmas… it’s nice to see things for 75% off! But, looks like that won’t happen this year. ðŸ™
This information was given to me from Target. And can change and adapt over time. But use this post as a heads up for what to be watching for.
Stephanie
No Good.
Cheri
Dislike! Dislike!
Jennifer
Well, that sucks!
nicole
Is there anything we can do to tell them we don’t like this? Anyone we can write? I seriously get most of my clothes from target when they are 75% or more off.
Natalie
I wonder why they are doing it when they woudl have recieved more money from selling the items for clearance? At least they get a little money from it selling at clearance vs. getting rid of it.
Diana
What’s going on with Target?? From their staff that is not coupon friendly to the reduction in clearance items. They’re really pushing customers away.
Angie
I love buying all my wrapping and ribbon at 75% + off. I will definitely miss it and my check walmart out a little more.
Allyson
Booooooo and not in a Halloween way!
Kirstin
Yeah, that just means I won’t be buying ANYTHING on clearance at Target. Really.
Tiffany
I actually think it’s neat Target is willing to donate unsold merchandise! 50% off is still a great deal for us couponers, and think of how many different organizations and charities will benefit from their donation.
Marcie
They currently donate all the unsold merchandise anyway. I talked with a manager in the fraud department after last Christmas when I found an item that no longer gave a price when I scanned it. He told me they had donated everything that hadn’t sold and that was why it was no longer in the system. So not giving us a bigger discount of 75% before they give it away is pretty ridiculous.
Celeste
It’s true that it is generous of them to donate, BUT when you’re a mom like me that has to either shop clearance or thrift stores, it’s nice to know that I can get our family new things that look nice for similar prices to the thrift stores when that is all we can afford. I think if they sat back and looked at it that way, they’re being just as generous with cutting their prices deeper than 50%.
M
Celeste,
AMEN to that! That is why I buy Target Clearance for my kids and for birthday gifts for nieces and nephews!
Michelle
I think it is cool that they are going to donate stuff. Yes it is nice getting things for cheaper, but there are so many people who can’t even afford it when it is 75% off.
MRL
Yes, there are probably people who can’t afford it when it is 75%. Having said that, I love when it is 75% off because that is when people like me, who can’t afford full price brand new, would buy it to donate it to a Sub for Santa or Christmas Box House, etc. That would make it a win-win for Target. They would still get some money and people who can’t afford 75% off would still get the clothing because of people donating it like me. And my kids could still get nice clothes that fit into our budget.
This new policy sucks!
Shannon
I’m all about being charitable, but I really rely on filling in my kids’ wardrobes (and sometimes my own too!) with cheap clearance clothes from Target. Definitely won’t be drawn so much to their store with this new policy. Lame.
Shana
I guess I won’t be getting any more new clothes then. :(… This is balogna!
Bonnie
I know that Target already gives their unsold merchandise to the local Salvation Army in UT. I’ve bought stuff there before, so we know they are already being charitable. But sometimes the SA has it marked for more that what Target had it clearance for. I agree I’m bummed about toys and stuff, but when I’m out of town I guess I’ll hit up the local Targets for clearance deals–lol!
Keri
Well, I guess I’m not sure what they are trying to test. I too have a very tight budget and kids that just keep growing, those 75% clothing deals save me so much money (especially considering that it’s sometimes cheaper to buy brand new clothing at 75% off at Target versus used at D.I.)
I think the bottom line is it’s going to hurt some of their sales, especially the after holiday sales.
btw – I know that Salvation Army gets a lot of stuff from Target (at least the one in West Valley does), but sadly they try to get the MSRP price off of those items.
Melissa
Oh that’s a bummer. I’m sure it’s all about Target’s bottomline. If they clearance it at 75% off they may not get as much as they might if it’s donated at full retail price – tax credit…whatever. It still bites for consumers.
Meredith
Target is doing some STUPID things lately! I’m beginning to like them less and less!!!!!
Melea Johnson
Yeah, well just remember that this is just a test market. So, hopefully they will realize that it doesn’t help them to not discount further than 50% off. Let’s cross our fingers they don’t implement it forever!
Rick
50% is still 50% and is still a good deal, thats fine with me if they keep the changes. EVERY one of yo would jump on any other deal if you seen it at 50% off online or in stores.
Ashley Sovereen
Yes 50% is still good for some things…but be careful when you say EVERYONE. I for one buy a lot of my clothes at Savers or at garage sales.
Sally
I can understand the charity part and think it’s a great idea, but those deep discounts are what keep my kids in clothing. Depending on the time of year, the “charity case” might just be me 🙂
Staci
This stinks. I hope the test “flops” and they go back to the ways consumers enjoy.
I hope this doesn’t happen at my store! I already saw a change on mark downs. For example: The holiday candy was only 30% off when it was the 50% off day. DUMB!
Thanks for the heads up anyway.
Jennifer Speakman
Sounds like everyone needs to not buy while it is 50% off. If they start donating more then they are selling they’ll realize there is a loss in revenue and go back to the 75 & 90% off markdowns.
And Target does have comment cards so the best thing to do is write your complaints there or find a corporate number and complain that way. It may not do good now but it might later.
lisa
I buy most of the things I donate on the Target 75% off rack. I just bought seven pairs of PJs for a pajama drive which I would not have been able to afford normally. All the toys for school toy drives at Christmas are purchased there as well.
Marcie
Good for you Lisa! This is the only way I am able to donate as well.
Felice
i have a friend at target that is a manager at the Orem store and she said that they aren’t getting rid of the 75% off! she would tell me if they were. so now i am confused!
Melea Johnson
Hey Felice,
Like I said, it should be interesting to see what happens. Target has told me this is what is probably going to happen at all Utah Stores. But, they can definitely change their minds and only have certain stores participating… or, all stores may not be aware yet of the clearance change. So, we are just going to have to wait and see what happens. 🙂
