Living Paycheck to Paycheck?? Start Your Newspaper Subscriptions!

If I can give all of you one piece of advice, it is to get a Sunday Only newspaper subscription.  If you don’t have one, you are wasting a TON of money every time you go to the grocery store.  Printable coupons can save you money, but they won’t save you nearly as much as you would saved using them with the Sunday Newspaper Coupons too.

Some of you might be thinking that you can barely make it right now- living paycheck to paycheck and don’t think a newspaper subscription is affordable.  That is EXACTLY how I felt too! Once I finally did start getting a Sunday Newspaper Subscription, I was kicking myself that I hadn’t started sooner.  I save more money in my first shopping trip of the month than the entire month’s subscription of the paper- every single month!!!

So for all of you that are hesitant to take the plunge and get a subscription, just do it!  It is so nice to have a stockpile of items for our family and to not have to pay full price for things when we need them.  We just have to go to our basement to our own little grocery store and grab what we need.  Looking back, I cannot imagine if I had never started couponing.  We would still be struggling and it would have made things so much harder for our family than they needed to be!

If you live in Utah, you can see the list of Sunday Only Utah Subscription Deals here. If you live outside of Utah, call up your newspaper and ask for a special Sunday only rate.

Oh, and if you aren’t sure how many copies you should get of the Sunday paper, read the post about it here and all of the Freebies2Deals readers comments.

  1. Hello Melea,

I had been a newspaper subscriber for many years and one day I noticed that the Dallas Morning News was offering a $50 gift card to new subscribers. I thought to myself “must be nice to get a $50 gift card, I never got anything for signing up and every year they want to raise the rates”.

So I decided to email the DMN to ask them if I could get $50 gift card for not leaving them and going to their competitor the Ft. Worth Star Telegram?

To my amazement they wrote back saying that the $50 gift card was not an option, but they could give me a 20% Off discount on my monthly subscription.

I did the math and the 20% discount worked out to bout a $6 a month savings! I really did not expect anything and certainly never expected such a nice counter offer. So the moral to this story is “if you don’t ask, you’ll never know”.

Another lucky break for me is I have a carrier who is willing to give me the extra Sunday coupon inserts that he does not need! Again, you just never know until you ask.

Hope those tips help a few of your readers.

  2. Are the coupon inserts I get in the mail the same as the ones in the paper or do they have different coupons. I have been buying store brand items for four years now and I feel like I save even more money that way than I would with coupons because each time I have a coupon and the item is on sale, the store brand is still cheaper. I just think a 26 weeks and 50 dollars up front is a big commitment if I already get coupons in the mail and store brand is cheaper. Thanks for your help.

    • Ashley, ” it depends” is the answer to your question. Where I live we also get our inserts mostly from the mailbox ( Red Plum & P&G ). The ecception is the Smart Source. Because Malea receives all her inserts by mail, she can receive multiple P&G and Red Plum inserts , as appossed to you and I who are alotted 1 insert per person. I personally have to get my additional inserts from the dumpsters. Also, Malea can double coupons on Tuesdays at a few different stores, we cannot. So, as I said it depends is the answer. Ultimately, you do what is best for you.

    • Hey Ashley, if you are talking about the Redplum insert you get mailed to you. Most of the time, it isn’t the full coupon insert for the week. So you should be getting more coupons in the real newspaper. I always compare the store brand price against name brand with a coupon. I end up going with what is cheapest… but most of the time, coupons wins out when the items are on sale. Hope that helps!
