I have this question come up a lot and I’m curious what you guys do?  What items are you ok splurging on or even save up to splurge on?  And what items do you choose to save on?

Everyone will answer these questions completely different.  But that’s why it’s so fun to ask! So I’ll start and then you guys can comment below with your answers.

For me, I like to SPLURGE on Designer Jeans that fit perfectly and I wear them until they start to fall apart. I also choose to SAVE on kid’s clothing because there are always so many good deals that I never really need to spend a lot of money to get cute stuff.

I like to SPLURGE on Vacations and I like to SAVE on Vacations!  If I don’t think I will ever go back to that place again in my lifetime–like when we did Tahiti–I saved by waiting for the cheapest flights and even by finding a 50% off groupon deal for one of the hotels we stayed at on a black sand beach.  But I also splurged because I really wanted to stay at a resort that had the huts over the water you always see in the pictures!  Best of both worlds!

Ok, YOUR TURN!  Comment below with what you like to splurge on and what you like to save on!

  1. I like to go vacation/roadtrips. So I try to save for them, but we are last minute planners so we tend to splurge on them I guess.. and I splurge on clothes and things for my child.

  2. I love to splurge on skin care, not because my skin is sensitive but I really like to feel pampered every night and every morning. Like face creams, eye creams, toners, serums. I never splurge without getting a coupon first or without getting a GWP deal.
I like saving on everything else, food, vacation, fuel, etc!

  3. I like to splurge on going out to eat. I love good food and I love trying new things. We don’t go out often so I am ok with splurging when we do go out! I like to save on presents. I will very rarely buy any present for anybody at full price! Oh I have also found a love for makeup. That has made me start to splurge on high end products. lol

  4. I like to splurge on going out to eat! I try to save for vacations but if it doesn’t work out it doesn’t stop me from going and having a good time. On the other hand I save tremendously on food thanks to freebies2deals.

  5. I like to SAVE on gifts or any purchase that I know I’ll be buying for a while (food, diapers/wipes, makeup, household items like toilet paper, etc), movies, etc. Pretty much everything. I have a really really hard time Splurging on anything, but one thing we find is a splurge is where we chose to live. We pay a lot more in rent than we have to, but it was really important to our family that we lived somewhere that we felt safe and had enough room to spread out (and not feel like we were suffocating in our own stuff).

  6. I like to save on eyeliner because it always dries out before I can use the whole thing. Just last week I splurged on some new work clothes from Express. Normally I wear things from Target, but they never seem to fit quite right. I finally thought, what am I doing? I need to dress myself properly!

  7. I have a hard time splurging on most things. Thankfully my hubby doesn’t mind splurging occasionally. BUT, because I save on so many things–groceries, clothing, even vacations–I am able to stay at home with my kiddos!

    • I too have a hard time splurging. I don’t like to pay full price for anything & I was like that before I married. I save on everything I can. (Sales, coupons, competitive ads, etc.) If I REALLY like something, that would probably be my splurge but, they’re very few & far between. It’s not that we’re poor but, I’d feel guilty whenever I saw or used it. Entertainment would be another splurge. I’m not “into” traveling & my hubby is OK w/ it. I’m talking local activities (movies, eating out, etc.) I too am a stay at home mom so I feel saving money is almost as good as “bringing home the bacon”. I wouldn’t change one thing if I could do it over — love staying home!!

  8. I like to save on clothes (especially kids clothes since they go through the clothes so fast). Then we can splurge on family vacations!

  9. Can you tell me what kind of designer jeans you like? I’m willing to splurge on them because my jeans never fit well.

  10. This is on the micro scale, but I like to splurge on real butter (versus margarine). Four years ago when we were in grad school we only bought a pound of butter once a month and used it like gold. Then we had a regular salary and got so used to having it always. Now we’re back for the last leg of of schooling (phd) and I’ve just decided to save on groceries (less/no meat, better meal planning) so I can still have my butter. It’s amazing how the simplest things and little, planned for “splurges” can bring joy!

  11. I like to save on kids’ clothes. I always buy clearance plus a coupon. I try to stay under $5 per item unless it’s jeans. I will pay a buck or two more for those. I splurge on organic food. My family’s health is very important to me, but I don’t like breaking the bank. I shop at Sprouts regularly and hit the clearance carts at the local grocery stores. There’s always marked down and clearance organic brands. I never pay full price for organic.
