It looks like Walgreens has changed their coupon policy, and unfortunately, it is going to change the way you shop at Walgreens.

Here are the major points in the NEW Walgreens Coupon Policy you will want to take note of:

  1. Walgreens will not accept coupons that exceed the selling price of an item and no cash back is ever provided in exchange for any coupons.
  2. Coupons that appear distorted, blurry or altered in any way shall not be accepted; all coupons must have a clear and scannable bar code.
  3. For offers when multiple items are purchased and additional items are free (buy 1 get 1 free; buy 2 get 1 free, etc.), the number of coupons applied to that offer cannot exceed the number of items required in the “buy” portion of the offer.
  4. Coupons may not be applied against any free item received in any offer (See 7 above).

So basically, you can’t use a coupon with a value that will make the product a money-maker.  And it looks as though they won’t even adjust the coupon amount to just make it free.  So if you the product was $.50 and you had a $1.00 off coupon, you can’t use it!!  They won’t even change the value of the coupon to $.50 so you can just get the item free.

Another point to make sure you note is that if you are purchasing a Buy 1, Get 1 FREE Deal, you can only use 1 coupon.  You cannot use a 2nd coupon for the free item.

With these changes, make sure you print out a copy of the NEW Walgreens Coupon Policy and keep it with you when you shop-in case you run into any problems.

This change in coupon policy is drastically going to change the way you coupon and shop at Walgreens.  Will you still shop there?  Or do the changes not make it worth it?

  1. Super bummed!! They are filly building a Walgreen’s close to my house and are putting the shelf’s up! I usually don’t shop there because until now its been fairly far away, and another couponer clears the shelf’s almost every time I’ve gone. Maybe enough people will stop couponing there that they will eventually change the policy back.? Hopefully. Ill only go when its worth my time, case by case.

    • I think walgreens already makes you jump through too many hoops to get a deal. I have pretty much quit shopping there and price match their deals at Wal-Mart now.

  3. They started doing that at some of our stores around Christmas time, so I had to be careful which stores I went to, because they were not consistent….and I rarely had the actual policy with me at the time. Therefore, I generally do CVS…walgreens only on rare occasions ….anyway.

  4. I will probably not shop there as often because of the changes. They recently changed the policy at Kroger where they no longer double coupons so a lot of changes for me and my normal shopping habits of going to both Walgreens and Kroger. Just sucks, I always spent a lot of time with my list and always had success. Too bad, just have to buy less groceries now and live off my stock pile which is depleting rapidly.

  5. I don’t shop here because they are so strict. I like CVS so much more. Their sales are the same idea with coupons and EBC’s, but they are much easier to work with. Love CVS!

  6. I hardly ever shop at Walgreens or Rite Aid anymore since they started the register rewards programs. You still have to pay full price for the items and you have to use the coupons earned within 2 weeks. You can only use one coupon on an item and you can’t use it the day you earned it so you have to go back another day. It’s just too much hassle to be worth it.
I don’t understand WinCo’s coupon policy. I had a coupon for $0.75 off of two items. I bought the two items which were each less than $0.75 but more than $0.50. They would not give me $0.75 off even though my total was over $1. They would only give me the price of one item.

  7. When will this policy go into effect?

  8. I wonder if they’ll still accept a coupon for an item that is free with register rewards. Technically, you are paying full price for the item minus the coupon but you are getting your money back through the register rewards. Anyway, if they are going to be this strict, it’s just another excuse not to shop there ever again!

  9. I stopped shopping at Walgreens a couple of years ago. I only shop at CVS and Rite Aid. I have been to several different Walgreens, and no matter where I shop, the cashiers and managers are always rude. They give me such a hard time with my coupons that I can’t see myself ever going back, even for a money making deal. They treat me as if I my coupons are fake; I have even been asked several times where did I get them from (before they even scan the coupons). With the new coupon policy, Walgreens sucks even more!!!
