If you have been holding out to get a Target Red Debit Card, it is time!! Black Friday deals are already popping up in-store and online. And during Black Friday week, it is going to be insane!
What if you could get crazy prices and then get an extra 5% off?? And, what if it would ship to you free?? You could do ALL of your Christmas shopping online, in your PJs and get the best price!
I signed up for the Target Red Debit Card earlier this year, and it is the best thing I have ever done. It DOES NOT pull your credit. That is why I opted for that, over the Credit Card version.
Basically you head over, sign up for the Target Red Debit Card and then link your card to your checking account. Any time you use your Target Red Debit Card, the money will come straight out of your checking account.
So instead of using your actual debit card, you can have the Target Red Debit Card take the money out of the same account. There are no fees, no charges, nada. It’s pretty sweet!
So if you haven’t done so, hurry over here and set up your FREE Target Red Debit Card. It will take a few days to process and you will want to have your card as soon as you can for all of the Black Friday Deals!

Do you get 5% off with every purchase or just your first purchase? Does the discount work only online or in-store too?
Melea Johnson
EVERY purchase. And the discount works online and in-store.
Nicole
Thanks. I was actually just looking at something I needed and hate paying shipping and didn’t wan’t to spend extra money to get free shipping. I’ll have to look more into this. Thanks for letting us know about it.
Courtney
Love my redDebit card! Use it every time, weather my purchase is big or small. By the time I stack manufacturer coupons, target coupons, the cartwheel app AND the 5%, target’s deals blow everybody else out of the water! And if they don’t, they pricematch!! Not to mention the free shipping online! The redDebit helped tremendously last Christmas! 🙂
Kaylee
I LOVE my red card! I love that even when I have used a Target gift card for part of my purchase and my red card for the other, they still give me free shipping–I appreciate that kind of customer service!

Funny because I am one of those who HAS put off getting mine! Gonna take your advice and pull the trigger!
Leesa
I put off getting mine until just recently and now I wonder why I waited so long! The advantage to having it is so great! Who doesn’t like saving 5% every time!!! Free shipping on purchases on line makes it even better!!!!
Shari
I also love my redcard. I don’t live near a Target so I shop online quite a bit and always get free shipping. I combine this w/ Ebates and it helps to save even more.
Penny
I have had mine for a couple years now and love it! I have saved so much money! I love the free shipping on any purchase. I also use my REDcard as my receipt for returns because I am horrible about keeping my receipts organized. You can also enroll in the Take Charge of Education program and Target will donate up to 1% of your purchases to any eligible K-12 school of your choice! And because it is a debit card it comes straight out of your checking account…no balance or interest to pay! I would highly recommend everyone who shops at Target have a REDcard!
Jessica
I love love love my debit card! It was so easy to sign up and that extra 5% adds up to some great savings pretty fast!
Cathy
Thank you for all your money saving ideas!
Lisa
I have been holding off because I am concerned about security. If it’s connected to my bank account what kind of security do I have if it is lost or stolen, or they get hacked? Anyone know?
LSW
I have been wondering the same thing which I why I haven’t gotten one yet either. Hope someone has the answer!
Alberto
I work for a Credit Union in SL and I haven’t came across the scenario with the Target Card but it would be similar to when you connect your PayPal account to your bank account. Ideally you would dispute the unauthorized transaction with Target first. What their procedures for unauthorized transactions are and how easy the process is of disputing the unauthorized item is up to them. If you find they aren’t helpful then you can always dispute the unauthorized Target charges. But essentially its no different from setting up any type of automatic withdrawal. You will always have the inconvenience of disputing unauthorized charges and have to be patient when asking to get the money back from your bank.
Alberto
As I mentioned before its really no different than authorizing any other company to debit your account. I do like the idea of saving 5% and free shipping if you buy at target frequently. You just need to be cautious and maintain control of your card at all times.
Reading the fine print titled “CONSUMER REPORT USE AND INFORMATION FURNISHING” —
You do give them authorization to obtain a credit report and to report information about you to credit agencies, third parties and their affiliates.
It’s like setting up an automatic withdrawal and if you don’t have the funds to pay at the time they try and take the money out of your account they can charge you a fee of 20.00. If you don’t ever pay them what you authorized they can report negatively on your credit report.

I just got mine a couple months ago. I don’t shop at Target all the time, but often enough that I have already saved quite a bit and I love that it’s not a credit card. And I’m super stingy about paying shipping so the free shipping online is my favorite!
Melissa Burton
First, I love your site! Thanks for helping me save money. Second, I just went to sign up on Target’s website, and they require a phone number and then tell you they–or others acting on their behalf–will call you with prerecorded messages. so I didn’t sign up. Does nobody hate this agreement??
Lauren
The reason they need to call you is to get your information to set up your card..They need your address and checking account info. If you do it in store they ask for this same info and you’ll need to bring a voided check
Melissa
I work at Target and got the Red card two years ago! I love it! And no I have never been called with prerecord messages.
I love the free shipping!
Lauren
Don’t forget to bring a voided check! It speeds things up 🙂
Veronica
Why is target doing this if they don’t make money off it somehow? I don’t see their advantage
Alberto
The way they make money is that they don’t have to pay or they save on merchant/CC processing fees.
chelsea
I am trying to use my redcard for my purchase this morning and it only shows the 5% off not the extra 5%. Is there a code or something that needs to be applied?
Nicki
Thanks for the clarification – NO CREDIT check means it won’t “ding” my rating with another check! What exactly do the “fees” mean on the Target website? I see different fees for the debit cards based on what state you live in.
Alberto
The fees they are referring are those similar or in addition to what your bank would charge for a bounced check or a returned ACH (automatic withdrawal). They process the payment using that method.
