Just a quick heads up that Smith’s will be changing a few things effective April 1st:

  1. Gold Envelope Rewards Certificates will be ending on March 31st.  Starting April 1st, all acculumated points will only be redeemable at the Smith’s Gas Pump. In actuality, you can get more for your points per dollar by redeeming them at the Gas Pump.  And it seems as though most people already use their points to save money on gas.  So, it shouldn’t be too big of a change.  **If you do have a Gold Envelope Rewards Certificate to use, you will want to do so before it expires- like normal.
  2. Starting April 1st, Gas Pump Rewards will now have an expiration date. For example, all points earned in April need to be used by the last day in May.

At the end of your receipt, you will always see how many points you have to redeem towards fuel.  So it should be pretty easy to save money on gas and see where you are at.

Another way to always keep track of your points is on the Smith’s iPhone or Android App.  So, you can download that for free as well!

If you currently aren’t using your rewards points to lower your fuel costs, you can get $.10 off for every 100 points you earn… up to $1.00 per gallon!  So- say you had 500 Rewards Points, that equals $.50 off per gallon!  And you can get up to 35 Gallons at a time.  That ends up to be a lot of money saved!  So keep that in mind the next time you go to fill up.

  1. Boo! I don’t think that spending points on gas saves money. I usually fill up at half a tank, but even when I let myself run out, I only save a few dollars over the whole month. When I get my gold tickets in the mail I can get up to $20 sometimes. I have even bought Smith’s gift cards when I got 4X the reward and that gave me more points, which was more money to spend on groceries. By doing that and buying gas at Costco, I think I was getting the best savings. Too bad; I’ll miss those gold envelopes/dollar rewards.

    • You should just wait to fill up…then you could be saving way more in the long run. 1,000 points would get you $10 in the mail, but potentially $35 off at the pump! I have done the 4x rewards points on gift cards too, and then used those points for gas. At Christmas they allowed you to use up to 2,000 points when I got gas, which was $2.00 off per gallon. Bought all my Christmas gift cards at Smith’s, got the points, and I ended up paying 96 cents per gallon and filled my car and my husbands truck! $70 dollars off!! I would have only received a golden envelope with $20 dollars. Way better in the long run. 🙂

      • I’m with Courtney on this one. If you work the gas deal just right, it pays off 3 to 1 over the rewards certificates. Once we have saved up enough points, my husband and I take both of our cars (plus a couple of 5 gallon gas cans) to fill up so we can take advantage of the full 35 gallon limit. It is easy to build up points when they do 4X rewards on gift cards. We have saved hundreds of dollars over the last couple of years using our rewards at the pump. I’m a huge fan!

  2. Not a fan of these changes. I like the quarterly point earnings, where you have 3 months to use points.

  3. Thats too bad I loved Smith’s because of the Gold Envelope Points. I would rather have the dollar rewards then the gas. I shop at Smith’s all the time because of the rewards. I guess I won’t be shopping there as much now.

  4. I’m with Angie, this stinks, but I’m really glad that you posted this so that we are aware. I doubt I would have known otherwise, and I would have lost a lot of points if I didn’t know that I had to use them on gas. I’m sad about this change, but thanks so much for letting us know, Melea.

  5. WOW! Thanks for the heads up. I never use the rewards for gas, so this will be a change. Thanks again for cluing me in.

  6. I used to use the points for gas because it was a better deal than the rewards certificates, but now I only have a car that has a 12 gallon tank so even if I let it almost run totally out of gas with 1000 points I would barely make my money on that. It used to be great when I had my truck but since I started driving a car not so much. Does this mean they also won’t be sending out the coupons anymore either. I use those all of the time to also get bonus points. Looks like I won’t be shopping there as much if there won’t be any benefit to accumulating points. It just seems like overall all stores are just making it more difficult to save money.

  7. Lame for those whose Smith’s doesn’t have a gas station! I’d have to travel 15 miles out of my way to use my points.

  8. I hope that everyone who is unhappy with these changes (like me!) will contact Smiths instead of just commenting here. Smith’s Gold Envelopes was one of the most brilliant marketing schemese I’ve seen from a grocery store, ever. Why mess with a good thing?

  9. We have bigger vehicles and LOVE the fuel rewards. However, I did like having the entire quarter to use the points.

  10. I’m have a senior citizen friend who counts on the gold envelope and savings certificate! She doesn’t own a car or drive and that few extra dollars and coupons really helps her as she is on a fixed income. She will now have to cut back on the amount she spends on groceries.
