My Shopping Trip WITHOUT Coupons!

Yesterday, I thought I would do a little experiment and go grocery shopping at Wal-Mart without any coupons.  It has been such a long time since I haven’t used coupons, that I forgot how much money they saved me!

To say the least, I ended up spending WAY more than I would if I would have had coupons.  Then, it triggered an idea in my head.  What if I did a new experiment??  Do two purchases with the same items in them and see how big of a difference coupons really make.  One transaction would include coupons, and one would include the cheapest item whether it is a brand name or store brand.

I think it would be really fun to see how much we are really saving with coupons.  And, it is good to get a reminder about how much you are saving- especially if you use coupons non stop like I do!~

What do you guys think??  Sound like a FUN experiment to you too?

  2. sounds like a great experiment. I've wondered the same thing, I've only just started couponing and sometimes it feels like the store brands saves more.

  3. I would love to find out the result! My sister is new to couponing, and feels like that's a "fault" of coupons … because you can get the store brand for cheaper. Please keep us updated!

  4. I was just at walmart telling my husband that it isn't always a good deal for their brand items. We compared waffles for example, eggos were 1.92 theirs was 1.36, I had printable coupons for eggo and the boxes were 12.3 oz. and their brand was for 9.9 oz. boxes. Coupon was for $1/2 so it worked out to .115 per oz and walmart brand equaled .137 per oz. My husband learned something new today and it reaffirmed my craziness for coupons. I would love to see your results too!!

  6. that would be a fun experiment, but will you include coupon shopping ontop of sales or just regular? That makes a huge difference. If you aren't combining the coupons with sales then store brands will probably be cheaper. I go on coupon fasts(shopping without them for a while) just because sometimes I don't prepare well but then I regret it because I could save soo much more combining coupons and sales for brand name items!

  7. Yes, please share. I'm pretty new as well to couponing and I feel the same way that others do. It feels like a big waste of time sometimes when they are out of the special deals so fast and every store has different policys and the time involved.

  8. I think that would be fun! I used to shop at Walmart and buy generic items thinking that they were the lowest prices, but now it's fun to use coupons and get name brand items for LESS! 🙂 I LOVE COUPONS!

  9. I would love for you to do that experiment. I ran into Walmart the other day and had left my coupons at home. I was so suprised how much I spent without my coupons. I could see them all in my head as I was charged full price for the items I was purchasing! It was not a fun experiance.

  11. Does anyone else feel like they are getting "Robbed" if they don't use coupons? I left my binder in my husbands car and had to pick up a few things right before we went out of town. Gosh! Also, does anyone else keep track of how much they save through out the year by using coupons? I was thinking of this but wasn't sure how to go about it. This is going to be my New Years resolution!

  16. I think that's an awesome idea. Sometimes I go to buy the brand name stuff because I have a coupon and then I find out the store brand is still cheaper.

  17. Quick question about using so many coupons…I find that if I use more than 4 or 5 coupons, I always get cheated out of one or more coupons. I am a pretty anal person and so I count the number of coupons that I have so when I get home and look at the receipt and find out that one or two coupons did not scan, it drives me crazy. That is one or two dollars that I could have saved. Have you ever ran into this problem and if so, what do you do about it? Do you hand them the coupons one at a time to make sure they scan? Thanks.

  18. @ Kelli – That's exactly what I do. I hand over the coupons one at a time and then also look at the register to make sure they are deducting the correct amount. If you take the time after you're done checking out and see a mistake you can go to customer service and they'll reimburse you for the missed coupons. I've done this at Target and at Walmart.
