4 ways to save on airfare

Are you planning a vacation in the near (or far) future?  Would you like to get a jump start on saving on your trip?

If flying is part of your vacation plans, I’m sure you know how much of an expense it can be.  There are ways to save though, so check out these 4 ways that you can save on airfare the next time you fly!

  1. Know which days to book – Believe it or not, shopping for airline tickets is often cheaper on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  Make sure to not click “buy” on any other day of the week as your flight will likely cost more.  In addition, book your flights departure and arrival days on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays whenever possible.  These tend to be the cheapest days to travel.
  2. Travel during the Shoulder Season – In addition to traveling on specific days, you should also try to schedule your trip during the travel Shoulder Season.  The shoulder season is the period of time between the high season and the low season of your destination.  This season can be different times throughout the year dependant on where you are traveling to. For example, if you are planning a trip to Mexico, the months of April and May are generally cheaper, because they fall between Spring and Summer breaks, but the weather is still great enough for a vacation. (Keep in mind though that these times are often when the resorts are doing their construction, etc. so you may run into extra noise and less than stellar views, but that may cut your costs even more.)
  3. Sign up for newsletters – Be sure and sign up for email newsletters of travel sites and airlines.  You will get advanced notice of sales and promotions.  Also, airlines and travel sites often release coupons and promotional codes available exclusively to newsletter recipients.
  4. Research your trip on various travel sites – Travel sites such as orbitz and expedia are a great way to research prices based on dates.  Plus, they make it very easy to adjust your departure and arrival dates in order to see if you can get further discounts (sometimes longer trips are cheaper fyi).  With that being said, it is not necessary to book through these sites.  You may save a couple of bucks, but airlines also sometimes offer perks if you book your tickets directly through them instead of discount travel sites.
