Looking for a great Father’s Day idea? Here’s something personalized you can create for Dad, or really for anyone or any occasion! You’ve probably seen them and wondered HOW DO THEY GET THAT TO STAY ON? Well, by following these steps you’ll be able to create a beautiful mug and get your artwork to stay! Plus, the mugs were super cheap, I’m talking only $.88 at Walmart! So you’re not having to spend a lot of money to create a memorable and personalized gift.

Here are the markers you’re going to want to use. They are oil based and will adhere to your mugs. Plus you’ll be able to get a lot of use out of them so maybe think ahead to some upcoming birthdays or events that you could make a personalized mug for. You can find these markers on Amazon for $12.97. Or if you prefer to shop at Walmart you can get them for $12.97 as well and pick them up in-store for FREE! Ready to get started?

Here’s what you need:

  • a plain mug
  • oil based sharpies
  • an oven
  • adhesive letters or design (optional)

First you’ll want to clean your mugs either with soap and water or rub it with some rubbing alcohol. You’ll then want to place your adhesive letter or design where you’d like it if you plan on using one. Now this is where you get to let your creativity come into play. You can let your kids (or yourself) come up with their own design or do a simple dot artwork around your adhesive letters. It’s your choice and a great way to create something unique. The possibilities are endless, you could spell out Dad or Papa, create a Mr. and Mrs. for the newlyweds or add someone’s initial. But first make sure your pens are ready by following the directions on the back of the package and giving them a good shake.

Once you’re done with your design and satisfied with how it’s turned out you’ll want to bake it to set it in. Place your mugs in the oven and turn it on to 250 degrees. By placing them in the oven before it’s pre-heated you run less of a chance of them cracking from the temperature change. Once it’s preheated, set your timer for 2 hours. Then after your timer goes off, turn off the oven with the mugs still inside. Let them cool completely and then remove them! Simple right?

You could leave it just as is or add some of their favorites inside like Hersey kisses, nuts, hot chocolate packets, gummy bears or so much more. Hopefully you’ll have fun creating these memorable pieces with your kids and this way you’ll be able to keep them for years to come.
