Thanksgiving is almost upon us. And since you guys specifically email me and request this list each and every year, I knew we needed break down the prices of the “Staple” items most of us use on Thanksgiving Day. I started to put a comparison list of the prices for Walmart, Target and Smith’s (my local Kroger store)…after researching each ad, Target and Walmart were neck and neck! Target came out on top, but only by a couple of dollars. (Note: Walmart did not advertise most of their Thanksgiving food items in their weekly ad.  So each Walmart store will have items priced differently. Items below are based off my Walmart location.)

Here is a side by side comparison:

                                                                      (Target)                      (Walmart)

Turkey                                                            $.079/lb                     $.093/lb

Gravy                                                              $1.00                          $1.25

Stove Top Stuffing                                          $1.00                          $1.25

Canned Green Beans                                       $0.59                          $0.50

Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom                    $0.75                          $1.00

French’s Onions                                              $2.99                          $3.46

5 lb Russet Potatoes                                        $1.99                          $1.99

Cranberry Sauce                                             $1.39                          $1.38

12 Dinner Rolls                                              $2.69                          $2.96

TOTALS                                                        $20.30                         $23.09

Totals w/o Turkey                                         $12.40                          $13.79

Smith’s does have their turkey’s for $0.79/lb. However, that is only with an additional purchase of $25.00. But you can get a 10lb turkey and the trimmings for $20.30 at Target. So if you are going to shop at one place this year, Target looks like your best bet!

If you are interested in dessert here is a comparison for those items as well:

                                                             (Target)     (Walmart)      (Smith’s)

Marie Calendars Pumpkin Pie               $4.99            $4.97            $3.49 +Free Can of Redi-Whip

Cool Whip                                             $1.00            $0.98            $1.00

TOTALS                                               $5.99            $5.95           as low as $3.49

As you can see, the Target sale actually is the cheapest option overall. However, Walmart isn’t far behind. If you don’t have a Super Target in your area, you can always price match. And if you have other smaller chain stores in your area, you might even find better prices than that. So, be watching your ads and do a quick comparison off of the charts I have above.

If you choose to shop at Target this year,
you can actually purchase your Thanksgiving and feed a family of 6-8 for only $24.23!
