  1. Does anyone know if this will work if you gift yourself a membership to start a day after your current one expires?

    • I assume it would not work seeing how it’s for new members only. You can always ask their customer service though to find out for sure.

    • I tried to see if it would work, but at the last page of checkout it still had it as $99. Oh well

  2. This is a nice gesture but I can’t help to be insulted since I have been a member since the beginning. How sad that you think your regulars should get shafted. I am going to have to reconsider my membership this year.

    • When Amazon had their last “New Prime Membership” incentive I sent a short, polite note to customer service explaining how my children had just gotten a discount membership for a year because I had shared my experience and even my Prime until they moved out. I asked very meekly if they might see their way to extending the special to me. Within a week I received a gift card. I sent another note thanking them and a note to the CSA’s boss complimenting the service provided specifying the name of the agent.

My experience has been that most of the rhetoric I read or hear engages tones of indignation, condescension and entitlement. For example, the expression that “regulars should get shafted” is absolutely incorrect and will probably not realize the desired end. Amazon presented me with the complete agreement and I accepted it. I have been getting exactly what I paid for and I would go further to say that whenever an issue was a bit unclear, Amazon resolved it in my favor. Amazon has the right, even the duty to its stockholders, to expand its customer base through targeted promotions and invitation only deals. I appreciate the special coupons and prices Amazon has extended to me over my years as its customer. These have probably been offered because of previous business and monitoring my browsing of the site. Was someone else “shafted” because they didn’t receive the same opportunity? Not in the least. If they choose to purchase something at the price advertised to them they have successfully completed a fair purchase contract.
One further example. Back in 2009 I took advantage of “cash for clunkers” incentive. The minivan I traded in was 14 years old and had over 350,000 miles on it. Book value of $150. The vehicle I was buying listed for a bit over $29,000, but there were rebates and specials going on. When they brought papers in they had priced the new car at at full list while reminding me what a great deal I was getting. I told them that just because they had all these incentives, I wasn’t willing to pay more than the average price they had been agreeing to before the incentives hit. They hemmed, hawed told us they would be able to sell it for that to someone else, blah, blah, blah. The point in my mind was that none of the incentives cost the dealer anything, but he had no problem increasing his price for the car because the final price was still a great value. It was up to me to decide if I wanted to pay full list for the car or if I would only pay what he had been selling it for previously. In either situation I was getting a fantastic deal, but in the end I paid about $2,000 less than friends who bought the same car from the same dealer. Did they get shafted? NO! They got a great value. Did I “shaft” the dealer? Trust me, no customer has ever shafted a car dealer.

As a business owner it was important for me to get a clear description of what a client expected and how much time and materiel would be required to complete the task with a profit and a happy client. Competitors might bid higher or lower hourly rates or they might estimate more or fewer hours. In the end success was leaving the client feeling that the task was completed as desired at a fair price.
In most businesses many employees may have the same job description. Rarely do any two of them have exactly the same compensation package (excluding min wage/entry level unskilled positions). No two will do the same amount of work at the same quality. It’s rare that there is a direct correspondence between productivity and compensation. One usually negotiates compensation when they are hired. If you agree to work for less than someone else, that is your decision and the situation is just and fair. An employee ALWAYS has the opportunity to renegotiate compensation. I organizations with merit systems regular wage increases are pretty well even based on your position and pay grade. Still, I rarely see someone go to their supervisor and ask for better compensation. Don’t be that person who sours and whines about the situation being unfair. In the end, you are the only one who can give you the shaft.
Justice is getting what you agreed to for the agreed price.

  3. It seems unfair not to offer this to existing customers. How about some loyalty rewards for longtime members?

  4. They have changed it now as of Aug 15th and you can only share with one adult household member with the same address and children. If you are already sharing then it doesn’t change for you until you renew I assume.

      • Talking to customer service now and asked this question.

Response: Amazon Mom is a plan and Prime is a subscription.

    • Yes. So here’s what Amazon said “Prime members get 20% off diapers subscriptions
and a 15% Baby Registry completion discount, compliments of Amazon Mom.
Amazon Mom gives special offers and age-based recommendations to Prime members with young children.”

  6. Why is the price of 67.00 not showing up. It says 99.00 for me.

    Reply
    • It’s showing up for me as $67.00. Keep in mind that if you’re an existing customer is will show as $99.00 since this offer is valid for new members only.
