Yes you buy apps, but it doesn’t have wifi so it has to be hooked up to a computer to have the apps downloaded onto the system. The apps on the website rang from about $5-25 dollars. You can also buy games for the system too.

We got one of these for my daughter last Christmas. It comes with some apps and you can get some free apps or buy game cartridges for it. The games aren’t cheap. Around $15-20. My daughter is 6 and is still entertained by hers, even though she only has the games that came on it and one game that we purchased. If you have the extra money to spend, I would buy a tablet or Kindle instead. She’s actually getting a tablet this year from Grandma.

I got one of these for my son last year (3years old) and he loved it until it got very boring for him and i had to keep buying all the expensive apps,games and books for it to keep it new and fresh for him. I finally gave up 6 months later and bought him a used ipod touch 4th gen – off ebay for $80 and a real nice case for $10 off amazon- done, now i update his stuff for free all the time for him!!!! But this is a great price for one of these toys if you are looking to buy one!

I saw a LeapPad 2 on Amazon the other day for 49.99. I wish I would have bought it now. I wonder if there will be any deals that good again. We have a LeapPad 1 for my daughter (age 8) and a Leapster Explorer for my son (age 5). They have loved them. My 2 year old is constantly trying to borrow them and my son would like a LeapPad so I have thought about getting him a LeapPad for Christmas and letting my 2 year have the Leapster Explorer. I’ve also thought about letting my daughter move up to a nintendo DS of some sort. Most of the Leapster games are for kids age 3-7 or so. There are a few titles for older kids too and she really likes hers still so I am undecided on what the best plan is for us. With that said, here’s my opinion on the Leapster systems. I love that they are geared towards kids and that the games all have some sort of educational value to them, but the game cartridges and apps are more expensive than the games and apps you can get for other games systems and tablets. I always wait for sales on the games and app cards so then they are a better deal.

Rats, looks like it went up $10. I’m trying to buy one for my kids for Christmas, but I’m hoping to find a deal on the leappad 2 Power (the one that comes with a recharger pack) because I’m just not good with replacing batteries all the time. You can buy a re-charger pack, but it’s about $30, so I have to add that to the price if I’m getting a “deal” on the leappad without it.
