Best Buy recently sent me the Jawbone UP to review for you guys. I was really excited to try it out because I had done research on the FitBit, Nike Fuel Band and the Jawbone UP and wasn’t quite sure what to get.
This review is going to be very honest. So I will go over what I think are Cons and Pros. If you are going to spend $130 on something like this, you want to make sure you get exactly what you are looking for– right?
For everyone who doesn’t know what the Jawbone Up is, it is a band you wear around your wrist to track your Sleep, Calories, Steps Taken, Exercise, Food…. and even habits that you have when it comes to your health. UP is a system that takes a holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle. Overall, it is a way to help keep you on track if you are trying to lose weight or stay healthy: “Live Better. Start Now. Jawbone UP. Track your sleep activity, steps, calorie intake and more with the Jawbone UP wrist sensor and free mobile app. UP gives you meaningful, personalized insights so you can make lasting improvements to your everyday life.”
With all of the things this band can do, I actually ended up using it the most for my sleep! The Jawbone Up tracks when you are in Deep Sleep and Light Sleep. So if you set an alarm to wake you up at a certain time, it could be waking you up out of Deep Sleep- which is going to make you feel really tired the whole day.
I have serious issues with sleep. No matter how many hours I get, I always feel tired throughout the day. It feels like I didn’t sleep at all. The genius behind the Jawbone Up is that the wristband tracks your movement and sleep in the background and wakes you up when you are in a Light Sleep mode. For example, if I want to wake up at 7:15am to start posting deals, I will put that as my alarm time and then I can set the Jawbone Up to wake me up within 10 before or after that time… whenever I hit a Light Sleep mode.
I HAVE NEVER WOKEN UP MORE REFRESHED!!! I cannot believe that is all it took!
The other thing I really like about the sleep mode is that the band will wake you up gently when the band vibrates. So if I have to wake up, my husband doesn’t hear that annoying alarm in the morning. Nothing is worse than being woken up when you don’t have to be, right?
So, the whole sleeping program on the Jawbone Up is my most favorite part!!
Other Things I Like:
- Tracks how many steps you take in a day. It recommends 10,000 steps for most people. Even after working out on the treadmill, I didn’t hit 10,000 steps. So it really puts the amount of exercise and moving you need to do into perspective **Tip: Make sure you calibrate your band so that your steps are counted accurately. It tells you how to do that in the UP App.
- Your wristband will buzz if you haven’t been active in a certain amount of time. It can help you remember to get up and move if you are the type that loses track of time— like me!
- You sync the Jawbone Up directly with your iPhone or Android Phone. Just plug it into your phone and all of the information the Up has stored will be added to your personal tracking app. It is a great way to see what you need to work on and what things you are doing awesome on! The app displays your data, lets you add things like meals and mood, and delivers insights that keep you moving forward.
- The Jawbone Up stays charged for 10 Days!!! Nothing is more annoying than having to constantly charge something. So it is great to use the band for over a week before you have to charge it. And, when you do have to charge it, it literally takes 10 minutes. Just plug it into your computer.
- Comes in 8 different colors! So, you can choose a band that will work best for you.
Things I Didn’t Like:
- Obviously, these are all my own opinions, but I thought that adding the meals into the Jawbone Up App was a little tedious. So, it is a good thing you can actually sync the My Fitness Pal App with it. I think their system is a lot better to track all of your food and calories and it will share that info directly with Jawbone Up.
- The same goes for the Fitness Tracker in the Jawbone Up. It wasn’t as detailed as I would have liked. So like the above bullet point, I would use either the My Fitness Pal App or RunKeeper to log it all. But it will still all track correctly inside your Up.
- I could see how the band could become annoying if you are wearing it 24/7. So make sure you measure correctly and get the right size. Otherwise, it won’t track properly and it will annoy you with being too tight or flopping around. 😉
- I know it is wishful thinking… but I wish the Sleep Tracking was a little more in depth. I am hoping with technology updates it will be!!
You can pick up a Jawbone Up from Best Buy for $129.99 Shipped! And of course, if I see any deals that pop up for it with the Holiday Season approaching, I will for sure let you all know!

I would love to have one! A giveaway would be fantastic! I’m curious of how well I sleep because it never seems to be enough 🙂

I have the same question as Jessi, for those of us who don’t own a smartphone. My interest was really piqued when I read about your sleep problems. How many of us could have such a brighter, energized day if we could only track our sleep AND be woken up at a proper time! Melea, very curious to know how the other similar products stack up to this one. Keep us updated!! 🙂

I would really like one. Mostly for tracking my sleep. I looked it up on Amazon and the reviews are not good. that makes me less excited to pay so much for a device a lot of people didn’t like.
Megan
I also love that it can track your workouts! When you put it in timer mode, it will actually time how long you worked out for. You can then go into the program on your phone after you sync the band and enter the type of exercise you did and how hard you worked out and it will factor that into your burned calories! So even if you do the treadmill, it will not only count your steps, but it will factor in how hard you were working.
I do have to agree that tracking food in the Up app is a pain, but it will link to more than just MyFitnessPal (although I think MFP is my favorite app that it links to). It will link to Lose It!, IFTTT, RunKeeper, MapMyFitness, GymPact, Wello, Tictrac, Withings, CarePass from Aetna, and Notch.
I absolutely love my Up! I highly recommend it as well.

I’ve never even heard of this, I would love it! Group therapy maybe? “Hi, I’m Shannon, and I’ve been living under a rock”. I ran into you at the zoo on Labor Day, were you wearing it there?

I have one, however because I am not doing a lot of walking (and I forget to put the timer on to calculate the minutes burned while exercising) I currently do not use mine. I used it for about 2-3 weeks. It is medium sized and light gray. If someone is interested in purchasing mine from me you can contact me. I believe that I have a warranty from Best Buy on it.

I have a FitBit One that does pretty much the same things. Syncs to computer or phone and to My Fitness Pal. It also will track sleep. But I can wear it under my clothes attached to my bra, or my waistband. Love it!!!! The bracelet thing wouldn’t work for me. But I am glad you found something you like, too!
Lisa
I would get it just so I can sleep better.
Melissa
Sounds fun! I definitely appreciate the reviews before purchasing…. THX 🙂

I love my up band, I sync to my iPhone or iPad, whichever is closer to me at the time. It definitely keeps me motivated. If iv been sitting too long it vibrates and gets me doing anything, which I would normally forget about with losing sence of time. Iv had my up band for a little over a year and it’s still helping me out to this day. When I have to charge it I find myself sitting surfing the web or watching tv:/ but iv def have noticed a difference in my daily routines since living UP. Note: if u buy it directly from jawbone online, you have a one year warranty which is awesome! Verses buying it from best buy with a 15- 30 day return/ exchange policy

How does it work pushing a stroller or grocery cart?
Lisa Hoskins
I love mine. It has made me more aware of how many steps I am taking a day. I park further now to get more steps in. I like that it tells you how many calories you burn so I know how to adjust my food intake to lose weight.

I had researched the different fitness trackers and thought I’d like the jawbone up the best but I didn’t want to pay that much and not be able to return it and get my money back in case I hated it. Costco was only carrying the fitbit flex in store for $97 and some other types online but no jawbone up, so I bought a flex in store and was never able to use it because it would not take a charge. I returned it and was told that a lot of people were returning for same reason. Tonight I happened to go to costco and there with all of the fitbit flexes was a jawbone up package – just one, with a large paper tag taped on it with a price of $69.99 which I thought was great, then I get to the register and it rang up $20 cheaper because of an automatic coupon. So final price of $50. I’m so excited to start using it!!

Costco does have it, but it is the UP and not the UP24. So it is plug to sync up instead of the Wireless / bluetooth.
Trying it out to see if will make sense to keep. Sure like the price though with the $20 instance rebate.
