Heads up: Nielsen Spots Open Again! And My $5.00 Freebie!

I signed up for the Nielsen Cosumer Panelist Spots forever ago.  But, I never got accepted.  I guess I just wasn’t the demographic they were looking for.  :(  I hoped that one day they would shoot me an email letting me know that I had finally been accepted.  But, they never did… until I opened my mail box this weekend.

Nielsen sent me an envelope with 5 $1 bills inside asking me to do a quick survey on the television shows that I watch!  Now that was a cool surprise.  So, if you have been like me and haven’t been accepted, maybe you will end up getting something like this in the mail as well!

For everyone who hasn’t applied, Nielsen is currently looking for more Consumer Panelists! I wanted to be sure you knew about this as soon as possible, since the spots fill up fast.

All you need to do is fill out the Nielsen questionnaire and if you meet their current requirements, you will receive a home scanner in the mail. You will then scan all of your home purchases with the scanner and upload the information through your computer and the information will be sent to Nielsen Consumer Panel. You will earn points for each scan & send task and you can redeem your points for electronics, toys, gift cards and more. You will also be entered into drawings for cash prizes!

Some people really like Nielsen and others say it takes too much of their time. If you do get accepted, however, if doesn’t hurt to try it out! If you decide it’s not for you, just send back your scanner at NO cost to you and you’ll be done!

Or, you might end up like me and get the fun little surprise in the mail!

  1. Once you send your survey back and they review it you could be chosen for another tv survey. If you are chosen they will send you $30 and another tv survey to fill out for 1 week on what you watch. 🙂

  2. I just done the 30 dollar one and I’m putting it in the mail today. I love that they pay you first and you don’t just do the work and get nothing!

  3. A long time ago, I did the TV survey. While, at first, it was exciting it soon became a chore. I had hoped it would have been electronic but alas, it was all hand-written. All I remember receiving was $1.

    • I recently rec’d a postcard asking me if I’d like to participate in their TV survey. They said they’d be calling me but, I’m going to pass on it this time. Summertime programming is very limited since there aren’t many shows I enjoy watching. If you ask me, there’s just way too much trash on & it just keeps getting worse & worse every year. *SIGH!*

However, Melea, I so share in your excitement!! I remember when I got mine!! I look forward to your thoughts & comments after you’re done.

  6. I received my scanner about a month ago. At first it was a little confusing and took a while, but now I’m having fun with it. I haven’t yet earned enough points to redeem yet but they have been sending me coupons and even some reusable grocery bags. You just have to have some patience until you get the hang of it. Thanks

  7. I just tried to sign up, and it said that they werent accepting people in my demographic..or something like that. Does that mean that I might receive something in the mail in the future? Just making sure I understand.

    • Hey Alicia… yes, when I tried to sign up a long time ago, that is the message I got. I was totally bummed and thought maybe they would let me know when they were accepting my demographic. But they never did. Then, about a month ago they randomly sent me an envelope in the mail with cash and a survey offer to quickly fill out. It was an unexpected surprise. So, even if you didn’t get in, you might still get something like that in the future. You never know!

  8. I just barely got accepted to be a part of the home scan and received my scanner over the weekend. Once I started reading up on everything, I felt a little disappointed though because it doesn’t seem like the points you earn are worth it. For every week that you send in your scanned items, you get a certain amount of points. I was adding it up and it would take something like 6 months before I even accrued enough points to redeem the prize valued at the lowest in their prize book. To those of you that have done or are doing this, is this really how it is? Is it going to be worth my time?? Thanks!

    • You speak the truth. We’ve been in this for approximately 2+ years & are still waiting to earn enough points to buy something nice & useful. Afterwards, (whenever that day comes. *SIGH*) we plan on sending the scanner back. Oh, another way to accumulate points is through on-line surveys. You’ll come to dread checking your email. Some of them can be quite lengthy & tedious while others only take 5 – 10 minutes. Still, it can be somewhat rewarding to voice your opinions!! Some of them actually ask you to type in comments. Another plus too is that you’ll quickly become an expert on the prices of items you regularly buy. So, if there’s a sale, you’ll spot it faster. : )

I can’t tell you if it’ll be worth your time or not for we haven’t received anything from their prize book yet. I can tell you though that it was a very stressful time in the beginning. Now, it’s just routine.

      • Well, it continues….Turns out, all this time it was my husband that rec’d the survey. Well, today, despite not answering their harassment calls, (we got 10+) he still rec’d the survey plus the $5 bills. He said he’s not going to do it & I’m not too excited about doing it either. However, it doesn’t start until July 5th. Currently, I’m only addicted to 2 shows so I could right them in?!?!?

  9. I just got my scanner this weekend. I does seem like more work than I had originally thought. I thought it was that you would just scan your receipts, nope, you scan everything you purchase. I think I’ll have fun.

  10. I received my scanner about 2 weeks ago. I was turned down because of my demographic but have moved since then. That was about a year ago I was turned down. I was very suprised to get it after so long. Using the scanner is pretty easy but you have to answer whether every item was bought with a coupon or store deal, quantity, price. My local grocery store sells meat and overstocks for 5/$19.99. That took looking up the type of meat in the book they sent, scanning the UPC they have in the book, entering quantity, entering price, whether it was a deal, was it a store deal or coupon. I thought that if I picked my store the prices would be there already bu they’re not. It does take a little while but after my first trip, when I had everything put away before I remembered I had to scan it all, I do it as I empty the bags. I left my scanner on the counter where I can’t miss it as a reminder. It’s a little easier after a few times. As far as points, I have transmitted twice and have 1650 as of now. The lowest point stuff is more like 26,000 points so it will definetly take a while to add up.
I also have been doing the tv thing for about 4 years. It just shows up one day in the mail. I leave it next to the remote on the coffee table to remind me. It is a little time consuming but not so bad it’s not worth doing to me. Besides, how often does someone pay you up front for anything ?

  11. My scanner should be here tomorrow. To those who do it, I heard if you use coupons it takes even more time because you have to not only scan it but note a coupon was used. Please tell me this is not true. I use a coupon for everything. lol

    • I’m so sorry but, it is true. You also have to input the amount &, specify if it was a “STORE” coupon or a MANUFACTURER coupon. There are also 2 other choices: STORE SALE & OTHER. When I have an item I got through a price match (Wal-Mart). I select “OTHER”. Don’t fret though!! In the beginning, it can be a very daunting task but, before you know it, it’ll become routine.
