So, it is inevitable, when competition changes, so do prices. Redbox has announced that starting October 31st, one-day rentals will cost $1.20 instead of the normal $1.00. Blu-Ray rentals and Game rental prices will stay the same.
To help ease you into the change, they said ” From 10/31 to 11/30, go to Redbox.com to reserve any DVD (even new releases) for $1 for the first day. Additional rental days will be $1.20.”
What do you guys think?? I know $.20 isn’t a ton… BUT, for people like me who forget to return the movie after one night, I think that is where all of the extra day charges are going to make a difference??

Where I live (in AZ), they increased it to $1.10 quite a while ago. I wonder if our prices are going to be even higher now. We switched to Netflix right before the price change there. Now I don’t know what is cheapest!?
Raygan Schieving
It’s better than what Netflix did to their customers!!! And really, $0.20 isn’t that much as long as you return your dvds on time!
Whitney D
I wonder if prices here will go up higher here because we’re already being charged $1.15 for our rentals here in Oregon. Yuck!
Jennifer
Yeah $1.20 isn’t that bad but I have a feeling this is just the first of many price increases.
Keri
It stinks that everything keeps going up in price, but I guess there is little anyone can do about it. I think I will try to remember to rent online for the next month though.
Calli
20 cents isn’t a lot, but when you think of the %, that is a huge increase for them. Bottom line, I am sure I will still use it because it is convenient, but it is never fun to pay more. 🙂
Kelly
I’m surprised Redbox isn’t using this time to show how awesome they are by NOT increasing prices, since so many Netflix customers were so upset. I think Redbox could have really capitilized on that and now people are going to just realize prices are raising everywhere and not be more likely to go to Redbox. I know a ton of the upset Netflix customers said they would start Redboxing.
Toni
I don’t rent a lot of movies but, I don’t like to see prices raise anywhere. They seem to keep going up and you know they won’t be coming down. I guess, this means that we will spend more time outside and enjoying the real world.
Rosalee
It’s still cheaper than going to see the movie in the theater! Yes it is a big increase, but I’m still willing to pay it.
Jaci
I wouldn’t care if they charged 5.00$ they can do whatever they want. That is the beauty of capitalism. Companies that stink, do not get our business. Personally it is still worth the cost.
Sarah MM
Ugh. I know it isn’t a ton, but something that’s $1.00 just SOUNDS/feels so much cheaper than something that’s $1.01, you know? Boo on Redbox. Even though I know I’m just a crazy.
Brooke
Sarah, I completely agree! I feel the exact same. I remember when iTunes did their price increase to the majority of new releases from .99 to 1.29. Yes, it was only .30 but I buy a lot of music from iTunes, and that was nearly 1/3 less music I could download because of the cost to my budget 🙠I do not rent very much from Redbox thankfully so this price increase won’t affect me too much. I just got netflix streaming online and I am finding for how much I use it, it is worth the $8 a month.
Cindy
I think it’s called inflation. Everything is increasing in cost. It’s the government making your dollar worth less.
Brittany
They are still cheaper then most other companies…blockbuster, etc. We quite renting from video stores because it was $4 or $5 a DVD and that was before the economy was really bad. We want them to stay in business because they seem to care about their customers. It is the Credit Card companies that are charging them more so they have to do what they have to do. I hope they can stay afloat.
Amber Mae
It’s not a lot, but I bet I’ll rent from Redbox half as much now. So sad!
Crystal
The public library has a huge collection of new and old movies that are always free!
Cristina
I just rented in AZ last week and it’s $1.18 starting with the first night.
AMANDA
I agree with others that it is nothing compared to the rip off Netflix threw at us all recentely. Honestly, I feel like so many movies are so filthy and disgusting anymore that there is little I feel I “HAVE” to see anyway. And although I will fight for my 25 cents coupons….Raising the price 20 cents after 8 years of a dollar isn’t worth booing over to me! I get a free rental from them once a month by signing up for their club and usually don’t find much more than one movie worth seeing anyway so I think it’s all good! 🙂
Kristy
I agree Amanda! We only rent one movies every few months, whenever there’s one worth seeing… and when there is one then I’ll gladly pay the extra .20 instead of going to the theater. I have a soft spot in my heart for Redbox. It makes me happy how inexpensive they are.
Elena
I did a month free Netflix trial through Swagbucks and am loving it. My kids are able to watch their abc and number videos as often as I will let them sit and veg in front of the tv and I get to catch up on movies and tv shows that I have missed in the last several years. We do not get tv in our area and cannot afford the movie theater or cable. I found that it costs nearly $8 just for a roundtrip to the theater plus at least $4 for tickets to the dollar theater on special night for 4 of us, so $7.99 plus tax and fees per month for unlimited streaming through the Wii we were given as a Christmas gift is worth it. Driving to a Redbox to rent a movie for one night or having to pay for a second night isn’t worth the cost of fuel and time and stress for me, especially since I have to hide the disc from my munchkins so it doesn’t get broken.
Carol
I use Blockbuster Express now instead of Redbox. Blockbuster Express has always got a ton of codes that you can use on their dollar movies for one night, i haven’t paid for a movie in over a month. Pretty cool.
Jackie
Isn’t it interesting how prices are always rising…..but our paychecks aren’t??
Lindsey
It’s alread a 1.20 with tax in AZ. It is still cheaper than renting from the movie store but I have a feeling the prices are just gonna keep going up! Then won’t be much different from renting from the movie store.
Lisa
I’m with you. If I could remember to return the next day not too bad. We’ve ended up buying 2 or 3 three of them though. . . .
