and a hand can opener if you have any cans that aren’t flip top.
and don’t open windows. I know it’ll be hot but open windows give the wind an entry point and can take your roof off. Don’t bother taping your windows. That’s an old wives tale.
Sorry about this. We’re always ready so these things are coming to me in drips and drabs as I tell my family up north too.

Oops, looks like my first comment didn’t post so here it goes:
Some helpful hints from a Florida mom who’s been through her fair share of hurricanes over the past 25 years. You’ll hate yourselves if you don’t take some precautions and it comes your way. You’ll hate me if it doesn’t but I’d rather you hate me.
Your phone land lines will probably work but your cell phones will only be able to send text messages. Make sure they’re fully charged.

Fill your bathtub with water. If you lose power, your toilets won’t fill up with water after the first flush. You can fill the toilet tank with water from your bathtub so you’ll be able to flush.
I’m sure you know to have water for drinking and washing, nonperishable food, ice, batteries, candles, etc. If you lose power, only open the fridge when you absolutely have to so things stay cold the longest. I’m sure the kids will love eating ice cream soup.

Put your garbage cans in the garage and anything else that could wind up being a flying projectile. Tie your patio furniture, the gazebo, and whatever else you have that you can’t take in to the deck, fence, tree, etc the best you can. Yes, fences and trees can get uprooted but it’s better if they’re tied to something rather than loose.
We have a coleman lantern that people use for camping. They give off a lot of light. The kids can even see good enough to color and play.
