Buying Fireworks: Where is it the Cheapest?

If you know me well, I have a serious love for Fireworks.  I will go to just about any event that has fireworks included.  And as you can imagine, July is my favorite month of the year.  I make our family go to as many fireworks shows as possible!

Ever since I started couponing and finding deals, I started noticing how expensive fireworks were and how much people were paying for them.  So over the last two years, I decided to figure out where to find them for the cheapest.

I receive email coupons from places like TNT that can only be used at the tents you see in grocery store parking lots.  But, even after calcuating the coupon in- the fireworks at those tent sales were SO much higher than purchasing in a grocery store!  I compared their prices to a local Grocery store here in Utah called Macey’s.  Each year Macey’s puts out a fireworks coupon in their weekly ad that you can use on their pre-packaged fireworks. And with that in-store coupon, the SAME EXACT fireworks package ended up being $30 cheaper than at the TNT tent.

You might find that prices are different where you live- and that is totally to be expected.  But, what I am trying to get across is that you never know which place has the best deal.  I would have assumed that the TNT Tent Fireworks would have been more of a wholesale cost.  But they weren’t.  So, please remember to always price check items like this you are wanting to purchase.  For me, it saved me $30 last year and I plan on doing the same thing this year too!

Any place that you have found a killer price on Fireworks??

**Oh for all of you who want in on the Macey’s Deal when the coupon comes out again this year, I’ll let you know when they do!

  1. I live in Utah, but my husband is from Evanston, WY, so of course we have to go there to get fireworks. We made a trip this year already and the specific store we went to (Phantom Fireworks) has designated areas for fireworks that are legal in Utah. The good thing about going up there is they cost about the same as in the tents, but almost every store does buy one get one free. Plus, if you spend a certain amount they have freebies they give away as well. It was definitely worth the drive for us. So, if you live close enough to Wyoming and want a nice little drive, go up there to get them!

    • You should try Blast Pyro on 1300 East and about 8000 South. My husband usually goes to Evanston. But these guys had everything we get and more and better prices. We also could see what the fireworks did before we bought them. Their website is http://www.blastpyro.com

  2. Either last year, or the year before, Reams (in Davis County), had those little popper packages (you know, the ones that the kids can throw on the ground and they pop) 5/$1! So, just 20 cents a package! I know that they were selling at Walmart around 3/$2-ish or so. I don’t remember the exact price–I just remember them being way more expensive than what I paid for them at Reams.

    • This is the exact same price we sell our snaps for 5 for a $1 or the entire case for $10. Our stand is located in Dillon MT. We are not part of any franchise like TNT and etc.. We do our own thing are price items as we would want to pay for them.

  3. The tents are seriously overpriced! We found that Costco had the most bang for your buck with their pre-packaged deals. We usually get the majority of our fireworks from Costco, but then get sparklers, flowers, etc. from the grocery store.

  5. We go to Evanston, but drive as if we’re going to Bear Lake. There’s a house with a little stand on the side of the road that has prices lower than anywhere I’ve seen. And Utah gets to do aerials this year!

  9. I use to sell fireworks for TNT. I sold them for 4 years…the reason prices are so high at the tents is because of all the people that need to be paid out.

The first couple years we did GREAT!! The grocery stores really weren’t selling them and prices at the tents were managable on any budget…great package deals, buy one get one, etc. About our 3rd year in, we started noticing the grocery stores offering cheaper prices and killer coupons that we could not accept and our prices were going up. We complained and they told us that they couldn’t do anything…the reason grocery stores sell Fireworks cheaper is because they up the price on something else in the store to make up the difference (like milk, bread, cheese). They also can only buy a certain amount of fireworks…once they’re gone, they’re gone.

Our last year of fireworks really did not help us a lot like it did the first couple years. That was the #1 reason we stopped selling. TNT promised to change but we never saw a change. We buy our fireworks where they are on sale, although the tents sell some items that grocery stores do not carry and we go to the tent to get those items because they tend to be our favorites!

  11. I live in Montana – where fireworks are legal and are everywhere! I find local stands are cheaper than the TNT or Beehive stands. Go to someone who looks local and ask them to beat prices – usually they will and are happy when you return year after year to the same stand. July is my FAVORITE month and we can start lighting them tonight! My husband can’t wait.

    • Yes local stands are cheaper than franchise brands like TNT, Beehive, Big Box, Pyromania etc.. We run our own stand in Dillon and won’t be undersold. We just bought a new 24′ concession type trailer last year. So if your around Dillon June 24-July 5th or December 29th-31st please come check us out!

  12. I find this post funny because fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts (although you still sometimes see individuals with them on the Fourth of July). Even if they weren’t, I’d be too scared to get near any! Even sparklers frighten me (although my husband and I made a really cool photo with one at our reception). As soon as you cross into New Hampshire, there are so many signs advertising fireworks!

  13. I doubt the stores will be selling the new TNT fireworks. They are selling aerials that are now legal in Utah. And I saw a sample of them and they were awesome.

  15. I went to Costco, but they didn’t have any fireworks this year here in AZ (maybe cuz the fires?). I’m hoping Sam’s Club will have a good package.

  16. There is an occasional coupon that Phantom Fireworks puts out. I got a really good deal since I found a coupon for at the tents in utah. we got to ariels at 5 bucks a piece that were usually 20 bucks a it was a great steal for that price. Those pop its that phantom sells that are supposed to be equivalent to firecrackers (but are not sadly they seem like they are 25/100 of a firecracker) we got 7 boxes of those at the price of 25 cents a box.

  17. NEVER WORK FOR TNT FIREWORKS THEY ARE A SCAM TO ALL TENTS. I WAS WORKING FOR THEM AND I KNOW HOW BAD THEY OVER CHARGED ALL THE PEOPLE RUNNING THE TENTS IN ARIZONA SO I QUIT WORKING FOR THEM.

    TNT IS A SCAM

  18. One reason the fireworks sold in the stores by TNT are less expensive than in the tents is that they are not the same fireworks. TNT is well known for selling cardboard instead of fireworks. Just open them and see! The same product from the tent has many more active components than that sold in the store. The store TNT fireworks will not impress anyone.

Yes, I have sold fireworks for TNT and 2 other companies over the years. TNT fireworks from tents are very expensive and good. My experience is the fireworks from Phantom tents are as good or better and a lot less money. If you check out the hard-core pyro forums on the internet, Phantom is consistently at the top well above TNT. Other brands are hit and miss–some very good while others not as much so.

It’s nice to be able to see videos of fireworks before you buy as well (especially for the aerial fireworks) so you have a good idea what you are getting.

I have settled down to only running one tent at the Layton Hills Mall and we run video of the aerials in the tent as well as on our website. Lots of return customers.

  20. The best prices on fireworks are not at maceys. The best prices I have ever foundcare at Blast Pyro.
They are in Sandy oddly enough right by maceys grocery store.
The product is all hand picked and the staff is friendly and very knowledgeable!
Best of all I got twice as much for my budget there as compared to previous years,
And there product by far outperforms anything I have ever used before.
They are at 8010 south 1300 east.

  21. I like ProvoFireworks.com. You can buy online and not have to go to the tents. I did go to my local tent this year, and got some fountains and stuff for the kids, but the big ones were so expensive and I had no idea what I was going to get. My neighbor told me about ProvoFireworks.com, so I visited the site. Their big fireworks were soooo much cheaper (not even close). And, they had videos so I could watch and see what they would do. They were cheaper on most of the other stuff too (pop its, gun pops).

Best part…I ordered online, and they were at my door in less than an hour with my fireworks (delivery was 5.00!!!).

The owner then emailed me a day after I got my order to make sure I got what I wanted that that I didn’t have any “buyers remorse”. Everything set of great, and the kids loved it, I stayed cool in my house, and the owner is just an email away.

    • Yes, I’m excited about their company too! I talked about them on Good Things Utah earlier this week. So glad you heard about them too!

  22. Walmart sells a cheaper quality of fire works than the tents sell which is why they are able to sell for a lower price. Also your tents are usually run by local charities who make less that 20 percent profits that go back to your local community. I would rather spend a little more for quality and give back to my community.
