Coupons at Smith’s: This Could Mess You Up….

DISCLOSURE: This post may contain affiliate links, meaning when you click the links and make a purchase, we receive a commission.

I’ve had multiple readers email me and let me know that Smith’s has finally blocked the usage of an eCoupon and a regular manufacturer coupon on the same item. We used to be able to stack.  However, about 6 months ago, Smith’s updated their coupon policy to state that wasn’t allowed.  And now it looks like the cash registers are being updated to block stacking altogether.

Since the eCoupon you have loaded to your Smith’s Card usually is a lower amount than your regular manufacturer coupons, the cashier won’t be able to unload your coupons.  And they won’t be able to accept your higher value manufacturer coupons instead.

So you will want to log into your Smith’s Shopper account and unload any coupons that are duplicates of the manufacturer coupons you will be using. Or, you may run into this problem at your Smiths the next time you go.

Hope that makes sense!

(Thanks to everyone who gave me a heads up about this!)

  3. I always wondered how they would control that. I figured it would happen eventually. Thanks for the notice!

  4. Yeah that sucks. I realized it the last time I tried to use a coupon and forgot I had one for the same thing loaded onto my card. I was annoyed because the ecoupon didn’t save me as much $$. This definitely makes their ecoupons much less enticing.

  5. I was told today that the store has received an email telling them NOT to take a coupon if it makes the item on sale free,,, even the ones in the buy 10 get the $5.00. After MUCH arguing, he agreed, just this once,, partially I believe becuase I had $120 worth of groceries in my cart. I wasn’t trying to get the whole store for free,, and didn’t have coupons for everything. The Ronzoni Pasta was the sticking point. I had coupons for $1.00/2, and with the BUY 10 promo, the pasta ended up being $.49. He would not adjust the coupon down, I even offered to buy an extra 10 boxes of pasta at the $.49 rate, without the coupons, without swaying him.
Funny, there was a peelie on the Classico Alfredo sauce for $1.00/2 Ronzoni Pasta products. Those were taken without question. (I bought 10 bottles and 5 had the peelies),, same coupon different format.
I was also given a $2.00 credit on a box of RiceA Roni, using the buy 3 pasta roni’s, get 1 RiceaRoni free coupon from the redplum,,, they gave me the whole $2.00, even though the rice a roni was on sale, so technically they paid me to take it.

I don’t understand the criteria here, and may call corporate for clarification. He said the email came down TODAY, March 28th….
Has anyone else had this issue? I was embarassed, and people behind me in line not only complained, but some of them left the store……………….

    • Joan- That is pretty ridiculous. Definitely contact Smiths Corporate and let them know their store is not following their own coupon policy. They should have at least adjusted the coupon down for you. After you get your email from corporate, print it off and take it with you next time you go.

  6. Thanks for the heads up. I thought it was interesting that both were still coming off. Now I will have to check out my e coupons more closely.

    Thank you.

  7. This happened to me last night. I wanted to get 1 Neosporin and 1 box of bandaids with the the $5.00 off 10 items….plus other things of course and the $2.00 off 1 bandaid 1 Neosporin coupon would not scan. She tried 4 times and finally asked the manager and he said if it is a printed at home coupon that won’t scan they won’t take it. Come to find out I had a $1.50 off 1 Bandaid 1 Neosporin ecoupon on my card that vetoed it. I was a little irritated, but I guess that has to do with the “stacking” we have all been doing.

  8. On my last visit to Kroger I saw a sign that said effective March 10th, Kroger will no longer stack the e-coupons with manufacturer coupons. My specific Kroger is really locking down on the store coupons as well. They issue monthly coupons that in the past I was able to stack with a manufacture coupon but now the cash registers block them and the cashiers won’t over ride them. I wasn’t a happy camper so now I will use my purchasing power at stores where I can.

  9. Does anyone know if you have two ecoupons for the same item, will it use the higher value one? For example, there’s a coupon for $3 off Huggies diapers and one for $2 off Huggies diapers. Which one will it use?

  10. Thank you for clarifying this! I had this happen to me the first week of the March to savings event. I had all these coupons and he kept scanning them and saying that he couldn’t take them, one by one he gave them back to me, I was not happy because apparently I had downloaded coupons from their site and then used manufacturers coupons. Why have e coupons that are manufacturers coupons? Why not have them be store coupons? SO dumb! So I left not happy and bugged that I kept people waiting, and feeling like I got ripped off!!
