Making Money at Walmart- One Reader’s Trip!

The new coupon policy at Walmart is definitely making a difference! Now that the policy actually says they will take the full value of your coupon, you can find ways to actually make money on your purchase or put any overage towards items that don’t have coupons.

Reader Ann sent me a copy of her receipt and this message:

“…I purchased 2 bags of Malt-o-Meal Cereal, 1/2 Gallon Silk Milk, Thomas Bagel Thins, French Bread from the bakery, Millstone Coffee, 2 Frigo String Cheeses, 3 Rayovac Batteries, 1 Excedrin Extra Strength and 6 Rolls Cottenelle toilet paper.  Total without coupons was $22.15.  After handing the cashier my coupons, the total was a negative 0.23!  The cashier kindly opened her register and handed me $0.23!  I said, “there’s nothing more fun than going grocery shopping and making money!”  The guy standing behind me was pretty impressed.  I think this was a good test of Walmart’s policy to allow coupon overage. ”

I couldn’t have said it better!  So make sure you are taking advantage of Walmart’s NEW coupon policy.  And always take it with you when you shop!

  1. Any time I’ve had an overage, unless they’ve changed it in the past couple weeks, there had to be a manager approval on giving change. It was a small amount like that too, so I just got something to cover it because I didn’t want to wait all day.

  2. Just ad the Wal Mart policy. Wal Mart will only accept $50 per transaction in coupons. That’s crazy.

  3. The Wal-Mart(s) in my town still do not know of the new policy. For the free item coupons from the manufacturer, they still want to take off the price they charged, not the “up to ____” amount on the coupons. I’ve had to wait for numerous supervisors, etc to read the policy (that I provide, cause I always have it with me!) over and over and discuss before they finally give me the “up to” amount as listed on the coupon. I’m sure the people behind me in line wish I would just take the charged amount and be done with it!

  4. I love it! I made 85 cents at walmart the other day, the cashier freaked out and said ” I have never had to give money like this!” then she turned on the dreaded light to have someone come check it out. They said, ” well, yeah, just give it to her” lol. The cashier was looking at me like I had run over her dog, but it was worth it to see that it worked!

  5. I love shopping at walmart with coupons! I went the other day and got nearly $30.00 worth of cleaning supplies (4 different bottles of febreeze, mr. clean w/ febreeze cleaner, and febreeze/swiffer dusting spray) as well as a bottle of Excedrin (which I had a free coupon for) and a cup of yogurt (which i had a free coupon for) total after all the coupons was $7.98. I was so excited! I went straight home and dumped everything on the floor and asked my husband how much he thought I payed for it all!

  6. Hmmm. Going to have to dive in and do some reading and researching. I’ve never shopped with coupons. I know I could be saving so much money and like everyone else I could use the money saved towards GAS — geez!! My lil’ Toyota Camry takes $65 to fill up when empty. I guess what I really need is a coupon mentor! Haha. Thanks for sharing this — I’m going to see what I can figure out.

  7. I must say that in the past I loved shopping at the Clinton Walmart. However, I had such a horrible coupon and pricematching experience at the Clinton Walmart, it was so bad that I will never go back. I transfered all of my prescriptions to Target which gave the store 1000$ a month from my health insurance, 300$ out of pocket from me. I will use Target for my shopping. I will only use Walmart when it will be a free item, or under 1$ I will not give them the rest of my business. Shame on you Brandy (customer service, really ?) and Clinton Walmart.

  8. You better watch those Wal Mart checkers like a hawk when they are taking off you coupons. On my last trip I had three coupons valued at $3 and reviewing my receipt after I noticed that there was only one $3 coupon taken off 🙠Who knows how many others were missed on a big order. Don’t be in too big of a rush to get all those groceries into your cart….pay attention!

    • Yes, you do have to watch them close. I hand each coupon to the checker separately and watch to make sure that the coupon value is taken off, because I’ve had that happen a couple times also and had to walk back in the store and have them fix it.

    • This is true. I learned the hard way when I first started using them. After using a bunch of coupons I didn’t notice for a few days, when I was looking at my receipt, that the cashier didn’t take about $15 of my high value coupons off! I was so mad at myself and the cashier and I make sure to watch closely now. I try to go to a cashier I’ve not had problems with price matching and/or using coupons.

  12. I have been trying to find cottonelle toilet paper coupons–it looks like you had one. Where did you get it? Does anyone know where to get some of these coupons?

  13. Just incase anyone in St. George area reads this, let me just warn you that the Wal-mart in Washington gets very huffy about the whole situation. I went in to get the Similac formula, I had quite a few(9) coupons from the mail from them and was excited to stock up on it for free and make some change for the rest of my purchase. they claimed that 5 of my coupons could not be used on it because there was a picture that showed the powder formula(but the description said ANY SIMILAC FORMULA) and I even tried fighting for it but they were not very friendly. And then the formula that was on sale, they claimed wasn’t the right kind and that they were all out of the sale kind(which was a crock, I checked the sale tag and the kind I picked up several times to make sure it was correct, I think they removed the tags at this point) and then they said more of the kind that was on sale would be in that night, I went back that night, they had the kind they claimed to be on sale but they took down all the sale items signs…
LAME! and the checker was flipping out that I had $5 off an item that was over $5, she really flipped when I said no it was on sale for $3.87…. none the less I walked away empty handed as far as the formula…. and I waited for like an hour!

I told the checker what their policy said and she said I have never seen this before I have to have someone look at it. Really lady?

I still have the coupons and you can bet I’ll be checking for that item every time I’m now.

    • I had the same experience, plus more at the Clinton Walmart. I made a stink, the cashier and customer service person were so rude and I was paying for alot of other stuff, not just getting the “free items”

      • yeah me too. I think they must not have proper training on the coupon thing yet. Or they just don’t care

  14. Walmart is bad, but I do not think Target is any better. Here in Las Vegas we have to lay out our coupons on top of the coordinating products before each product is scanned. This way the cashier is assured we are ” actually buying all the products”. The problem is if you have more than 5 or 6 items you are so busy making sure all the correct q’s are in place, and being scanned ,you can’t be preparing the rest of your items. And if you have children with you, well I doubt I need to say more. I’m so tired of cashiers treating us qers like thieves, and I don’t think the show “Extreme Couponing ” is helping anyone. I have cashiers ask me, ” You are not one of those crazy ladies on that couponing show that want everything for free are you?” ……….. Not the way I want to start any transaction.
