Extreme Couponing: Is it for REAL?

So after watching Extreme Couponing last week on TLC, I’m sure a bunch of you watched that and thought it was definitely over the top.  But, is “Extreme Couponing” real?  Will you watch it again?

Would love to have you share your thoughts!  I will still be watching it tonight and giving you updates on Facebook about what I think.  There was one lady last week who people said actually used incorrect coupons to get her total so low.  Practices like that will ruin couponing for all of us.

So I’ll be watching to give you my insight on the craziness of this show- what is real, what is “just for tv” and how they got their coupon totals so low!

  1. OK so that is just a little crazy!!! How can you spend $555.00 and then with coupons have it total 5.97!!! Is this real and I want to figure this out, of course I will be watching!!!

    • The thing you have to remember is, you can’t live off of cereal and mustard. Yes, they bought some other things too, but it wasn’t a complete grocery shopping list. They stocked up on sale/coupon items. That’s a great way to add to food storage, but not realistic to live off of just those foods. I try and balance my grocery lists with killer deals plus the day-to-day foods that we actually eat.

  2. I liked it, but just as another reality show. I think they were very inaccurate on several things though…largely the fact that after factoring in BUYING coupons from a clipping service, they didn’t ONLY spend what the show stated. I will watch it for entertainment but only while clipping my own coupons haha! I enjoy seeing other people’s stockpiles though…I get very giddy about my own and it makes me wanna keep going to know that someday mine may be just THAT much larger!

  3. The ladies on the show are getting deals on Produce and Meat products were do you get coupons for things like that. Coupons that I get in the adds & paper are for boxed products and body wash, razors, wipes etc. Not a lot of Fresh fruits Veggies & Meats… There was a lady in the 1st eps. that spend over $1,900.00 in 1 transaction and 4 carts later spent $103.00. Is that possiable????
I agree they can not live off of Ceral and 60 somthing bottles of Mustard.

  4. What I would like to know is how they get past the “limit one coupon per transaction” in the fine print?

    • Most coupons don’t say that. They state “one coupon per purchase” which means one coupon per item.

As for the few coupons that state “one coupon per transaction” (Similac formula comes to mind), most stores don’t care. I have only had one cashier (a young male) make me separate my transactions (but he also made me separate ones that did not have the disclaimer on the coupon). When I talked to the store manager, he laughed at the cashier’s actions, gave me a store gift card to make up for my being inconvenienced, and then re-trained all the cashiers on the topic of coupons that weekend to include all coupons in one transaction.

Stores want to get customers in and out as quickly as possible.

  6. Hey there I have recently had some first hand experience with “reality tv” and the number one thing to remember with television is that the only thing they care about is ratings. It would not be good tv if the “extreme couponers,” were not getting incredible deals. I am sure the producers meet with the store managers/owners and make it all possible, I mean really how else would they coordinate getting things in such an abundance. I do like the show and find it entertaining and I think that some of it, like their methods of obtaining and filing coupons and finding the store deals are great things to know. Well sorry for a pessimistic view but maybe someone like you, that has actually spent way more time couponing than me, can see if it is true or false.

  7. I really struggled watching that show. I put an honest effort into couponing, saving my family money, and people who buy 30 years worth of stuff just for the sake of “getting that rush they love” is wasteful, and flat-out offensive. There were a couple of people who I liked more than others. I have considered not watching it anymore all-together, because it left such a negative taste in my mouth after watching it. I don’t know…am I the only one who feels that way? The first lady bothered me probably the most. I am curious to know how much of that was actually for reality TV, because it puts “couponers” to shame.

  8. Ya….I like the deals. But they make it look like we are all wacko!!! So I have stopped watching it. But when people see coupons the do have a strange look. Bummer!

  10. I liked the show. I agree I don’t know what you would do with all that mustard and cereal. I was excited today because I got a stick of deodorant for 4¢! Target will let you use a manufacturer’s coupon and a target coupon on the same item as long as the coupon does not say that you can’t.

  11. I don’t think it is matter, the coupons will not scan if she try to use the wrong coupons unless the cashier push it trough which only if she/he does not knows how to read LOL.

  12. I agree with you Emily. I feel like it is dishonest. It is taking advantage of so many different people, and I feel like it will make it harder for people who want to use coupons.

  13. i may be wrong but i thought i had a thing saying if you wanted to be on the show to call or email something like . Maybe one of us could go on it and get a first had experience, not that we have stores that double or triple coupons and i think that was a huge factor.

  14. I just hope that the lady who buys 63 mustards for free and other stuff that is such a huge amount donates a lot of it. It is so sad to me why someone feels they have to stockpile to such an extreme!

  15. I used to do couponing. Bought like 10 Sunday ads just for the coupons, had the big binder all organized, and everything… it was exhausting!! I ended stopping because the local stores around me stopped letting me double coupon. I also noticed that I was buying things I really never use just because I had a coupon and I was also buying a lot of “junk food” which wasn’t great health-wise. However, watching the show actually made me want to get back into couponing. I miss the rush of going to the checkout with a $600 total and coming away only paying $30…it’s addicting! I know that a lot of stores have gotten stricter on things and couponing has come a long way just in the short time since I’ve stopped. It will take a lot to get back into things. I spent so much time couponing before and can only imagine how much work it would take to get the super great deals nowadays. I would say Utah is one of the hardest places to coupon because stores caught on to our ways… don’t you think?

  16. I thought tonights episode with the twins who were stocked up on diapers and didn’t even have a baby was INSANE! I just keep imagining tiny little insects or something creeping into those bags of diapers while they are being stored, only to slap one of those on a precious newborns bottom end. No thanks and NO WAY! ha-ha. I did like that they used the pharmacy coupons though. I do this whenever possible.

  17. I agree that these stock pilings are NOT a bargain if the products expire before consumed! It’s a competitive sport for those who have that kind of time.

  18. I do not understand how people get the totals so low?!!? I tried coupons and couldn’t get my total even close to theirs!!! Can anyone help me?!

  19. with all these people’s stockpiles, how much of the items go out of code/expire before they can even be used? how many products are wasted because these people are hoarding them?
