This giveaway is not only a fun prize to win, but it actually will help others in our communities!  Just Ask! is all about finding out if you have a personal or family history of Breast Cancer of Ovarian Cancer.  And I think it is pretty safe to say that we all know at least one person who has dealt with one of these Cancers.  Personally, my grandmother had Breast Cancer.  But she was able to detect it early and it saved her life.  So, it has always been something on my mind to not only test for, but to be aware of!

    • If your friend lives in Utah and is in her 20’s, 30’s, or 40’s she should join the Young Survivor Sisters, a local breast cancer support group for young women. It is free. Go to http://www.youngsurvivorsisters.blogspot.com. Hope this helps.

  22. I decided to do the test because my mother died of ovarian cancer, her mother of breast cancer and my mother’s two aunts also died…one from ovarian and one from breast cancer. When my cousin was diagnosed with breast cancer I knew that it was time. It was a very difficult decision because I wanted to know the truth but at the same time feared it. I wanted to stay at the title of “high risk.” My mom died when I was 18 years old and I miss her all the time. I am a mom of four young boys and I pray everyday I make it to be 50. If and when that day comes…it will be bittersweet. I hope they can find a cure.

  24. Just “liked” the Just Ask! page. My grandmother and aunt both were taken early by breast cancer. My Aunt passed away in her 30’s and my grandma battled breast cancer twice and it finally took her at the age of 78. It is such a horrible disease that is so much more easily treated with early detection. I encourage all to get their screenings done early and often!

  25. I “liked” JustAsk!!! I’m glad you helped me find this page! My Grandmother and Aunt were both diagnosed with breast cancer around the same time! It was a big struggle for our family because my uncle (husband to aunt who was diagnosed) had just passed away from cancer. Luckily they both caught it early and after masectomy’s and treatments, they are now cancer free!

  101. I liked Just Ask on Facebook. My husband’s Grandma Marge had breast cancer. Guess what, she is a survivor!!! She won the battle! What a good feeling it is to see her overcome such a nasty thing. Here’s to you Grandma Marge and everyone else who has battled or is battling this cancer! My Aunt is also going through the same thing now and had her surgery a while back. She has expressed how tired she is from taking the medication she has to take. It is so hard to hear her say she doesn’t feel well because there is really nothing anyone can do for her but pray. However, it makes the small things that most of us take for granted seem huge. For example recently she told about how she ran outside to catch her trash can that had blown away a couple times before. It was a blizzard out, the wind was howling and she and her neighbor stood out their, in her slippers and laughed and laughed. Who would be able to find joy in that? She did because to her it is those little things in life that count, and she does take time to notice the small things. I love you Aunt Deb!

My aunt was an amazing person whom I miss a lot. I also have several “fighters” that I walk for each year and wear their names along with my “angels” on the back of my shirt that I walk in. 198. My sweet grandmother, affectionately called Grandmary, battled breast cancer 4 times, and lost the last battle. I remember seeing her get dressed when I was young, and she showed me her surgery and the pads she put into her bra. She was a figher and never let her battles get her down. For any difficulty I face in life, I will always look to Grandmary as my example of how to be successfully triumphant in the face of adversity.

My Grandma had breast Cancer a little over ten years ago. She did beat it and has had all this extra time. We think she is now battling lung cancer… (She doesn’t want to know. But that’s the Dr’s guess to my aunt…) She doesn’t have much longer as she is starting to fade a bit. she won’t eat much anymore and she is always in pain… But at least she did get to know my boys. She is such a sweet lady! I love her!

  225. I’ve actually had two members of my family with breast cancer. The first was my great-aunt. At the time Doctors went by the seven signs of cancer. She had six, but her doctor told her he couldn’t do anything until she has the seventh. She did finally find a doctor that would treat her but by the time that came around it was too late. On the other hand, my sister’s doctor chose to ignore the new recommendation to wait for the first mammogram and caught her cancer in the very first stages. She was nervous but at the same time didn’t really feel like she had it because she was able to be cancer-free so quickly. I’m grateful for the screening and I hope everyone takes advantage of it.

  238. I “liked” the JustAsk facebook page and I would like to share a brief story of my mother and her breast cancer battle. My mother developed breast cancer many many years ago, but was diagnosed with it 6 years ago and ended up having a double masectomy. My mother was like a lot of people who noticed a small lump on the breast but was too scared to see a doctor about it. When it developed into a lump the size of an egg and was accompanied by feeling sick all the time, she finally told us, her family about it. I have to admit I was angry that she had kept this from us for all these years. She went to the doctor and they set her up immediately for a biopsy and then surgery. Her oncology surgeon was fantastic and maybe went deeper than most, but felt that he had removed all of the cancer and surrounding tissue that would be affected. She also had a couple of lymph nodes removed under her arm. She has been cancer free for 6 years now and I cherish every day that I have her in my life. Please, please, please….if you notice anything at all that seems abnormal, get it checked out immediately. A large percentage of the time its nothing, but don’t wait until you can’t take it anymore. My mom could have saved her breasts, bones, muscle and tissue if she had been able to talk about it with someone. Now with the history in our family I have been getting mammograms for 6 years as well. It doesn’t hurt and it gives me peace of mind. Find your local Relay for Life campaigners and donate your time if you don’t have extra money. Do it before you have someone in your family diagnosed with cancer. A cure is around the corner and they need our support.

The last time I saw her, she was in a hospital bed in her bedroom with all the tubes, etc. hooked up to her. I remember how small and fragile she looked, and just how sad I felt that it seemed like everything she was had been taken from her, even before even her life was taken at last. It would have been so nice to know her as an adult and to have had her good influence in the lives of my family.

I also lost a dear family friend to intestinal cancer that spread. The doctors in the states attempted to extract the tumors but when they opened her up they realized that the cancer had spread to her other organs. They refuse to go ahead with the surgery and gave her 3months – 1year to live. She then went to Mexico and had the surgery there. They removed tumors from 5 of her vital organs. She survived the surgery and lived for another 5 years. She lost her battle last year and left her husband and 2 kids behind. Her name was Mireya and she was a strong believer so I know that she is with the Lord.

My sister has MS. She was diagnosed when she was 16. The doctors told her she would only live 3 years. It has been 18.

Along with my mom these women are my heros. I am inspired by their will to fight. They are the definition of the word strong.

  295. I am a 3 year survivor of breast cancer. I was diagnosed at the age of 38. I had the BRCA test done and I was negative. It was such a relief to my mother, sister, daughter, and sons. Yes I said sons because men can get breast cancer and their risk goes up if they carry the genes. I have a friend who’s aunt was positive and had breast cancer. Her mother was negative. She also had two uncles. One was positive and one decided not to be tested. Just because you have the gene doesn’t mean that you will definitely get breast or ovarian cancer. I feel like it is important to know so I could make educated decisions for my treatment.
Another of my friends from the Young Survivor Sisters had breast cancer and was positive for the gene. Because she was Positive, one of her sisters decided to be tested. She was also positive and after further tests she found out she too already had early stage breast cancer. It saved her life.

The year Grandma died there was only 1 grandchild born, and 6 of her 9 children still at home. Ironically, a few of us grandchildren and our parents found several videos that were taken during birthdays and Christmas’ and were able to have a video made of them. Now the rest of the over 20 grandchildren have gotten a chance to “meet” Grandma in these videos!

When she finally did it really worried all of us and it was a complete shock. a few weeks later she got one of her breast amputated and began chemotherapy. As she was going through the treatments we all watched her become weaker and weaker and it put a major toll on the entire family. She was the leader, peace maker and matriarch of our family and everyone adored her. Then my grandmother decided that she wanted to stop the chemotherapy and just live out the rest of her life peacefully. She was an amazing women whom we all cherished greatly and she will truly be messed. 🙂

Then the doc asked about my grandparents. I am an avid genealogist, so while I did not know my paternal gm, I knew she died of ovarian cancer. Bingo. My sister and I both tested pos. for the genetic mutation. I had chemo, radiation and then my sis and I both had bi-lateral mastectomies. I insisted my ovaries be removed, the docs really tried to talk me out of it, but I held my ground. During the ovary removal they discovered early stage(stage 1) ovarian cancer! Back to chemo, now I am in remission for both. If I had not known about my family history, we would not have been tested and I would not have had my ovaries removed- I would be dying right now, instead of living.

  374. I have been battling ovarian cancer for two and one half years. I am currently off chemo for three months to give my body a rest because I was becoming so week. I am scheduled to go in to have a stint put in my ureter because of a blockage which is affecting my kidney. I have had the Brac analysis done as there is a lot of cancer in my family and my daughters and sister’s are both being monitored. I don’t think I will go into remission but hopefully someday soon they will find a new drug or test that works. I am an advocate of spreading the word to all who will listen about the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. Unfortunately, the symptoms mimic IBS and by the time help is sought or it is diagnosed, it is a stage 3 or 4.

  380. I just “liked” the Just Ask FB page. My paternal grandmother died from breast cancer. I never even got to meet her. I have only seen one picture of her – a black and white of her on a beach somewhere. I hate not knowing her or anything about her. Feels like a little piece of me is missing. ðŸ™

  382. I had stage II breast cancer 5yrs ago at the age of 34, I am a proud SURVIVOR and now my mom is battling stage IIA breast cancer. We’re both very fortunate to have had insurance and a strong family bond to get us thru our journey. I fought for myself, but most importantly for my daughter, I wanted her to see that she can beat anything in life, just takes time, patience and love. Too all my fellows Pink Sisters, stay strong and live full, we are all survivors.

  385. My friend is a breast cancer survivor and she is such an inspiration to me! She said she never checked for it because she was “too young” and “that couldn’t happen to me.” She has very young kids and her family really had a hard time going through the entire experience. Her husband had to stay home with the kids and to take care of her. Finacially it was devestating! She is in remission now and everything seems great. I need to learn from her and start checking myself even though I’m only 30!

  401. About 11 years ago my mom found out she had breast cancer. Her main concern was that her (seven) kids not be scared or worried. That meant she dealt with her pain and treatment very quietly and bravely, giving up the comfort of self-pity. I didn’t realize until I was older all that she went through. Women make incredible sacrifices.

  422. My grandma was dignosed with breast cancer. She battled breast cancer for less then a year when she could not fight anymore and my grandma passed away. Now its been close to 10 years since this happened we had a scare with my mother (grandma’s daughter). Had my mother not gone to the doctor when she did she would probably be treated for breast cancer right now. Because of what happened with my grandma my mother did not want to go to the doctor at all to get anything removed she was afraid she was going to die just like her mother. It took alot to finally talk her in to it. Breast cancer is a scary thing and I would never wish upon anyone. And for those who do have it, you are wonderful, amazing women.
