I’ve talked about this in years past. But I thought I actually needed to show all of you how EASY it is to use Kool-Aid Packets to color your Easter Eggs! Not to mention that it is a lot more affordable than purchasing Easter Egg Dyeing Kits.
For example, Kool-Aid Packets are typically $.20 each in stores. And if you are lucky enough to find the store brand version, they will only be $.10- $.12 each! Have your kids pick out their favorite colors and make Easter Egg Coloring a little more fun.
Another reason why I like Kool-Aid Packets more than regular egg dyeing kits? They are less messy! I feel 100% comfortable letting my kids open up the Kool-Aid packets and pouring them into our glasses of water. With egg dyeing kits, I’ve always been worried about them spilling or splattering it all over clothing or staining the floor or counter. You just can’t mess around with that stuff… LOL.
Not only can you use Kool-Aid Packets, but you can also use similar products like Jolly Rancher, Crush or Hawaiian Punch Single Serve Drink Mixes. They all give you a different color. So just pick your favorites.
Each box was $1.00 at my grocery store and had 6-8 single serving packets inside. So you could use 1 or 2 for your Eggs and keep the rest to use in your drinks.
You don’t need to add vinegar or sugar. Just dump in your packet of Kool-Aid into water, stir and voila! You are ready to go. Plus your home will smell like Fruit Loops–instead of Vinegar. 🙂
So as promised in the video, here are a bunch of colors, their names and what color they become after dyeing:
HOW TO PERFECTLY HARD BOIL EGGS EVERY TIME:
If you over boil your eggs, the insides will turn a gray color. And sometimes they will even taste weird or sulphuric. So here is how you can perfectly hard boil eggs every single time.
Step 1: Place eggs in the bottom of your stock pot or cooking pot. **Recommended: Don’t place cold eggs straight from the fridge into your pot. Instead, let your eggs sit out for a bit on the counter and get a little closer to room temperature. This will help your eggs not “Freak out” and crack when going from super cold to boiling hot.
Step 2: Fill water till it is about 1 inch above your eggs.
Step 3: Turn your stove on high.
Step 4: Once the water is at a rolling boil, cover the pot and turn off the heat. Immediately set the timer for 10 minutes. (Two Things to Note: 1st, make sure water is a “rolling” boil, not starting to boil. And 2nd, if you have an electric stove top, follow the directions above. But if you have a gas stove, you will want to turn your burner to the lowest possible setting INSTEAD of turning it off during that 10 minutes.)
Step 5: Once the timer goes off, you’re done! Uncover the pot and you can place your eggs in a colander and rinse the eggs with cold water to help them cool off and stop cooking. You can place them in the fridge until you are ready to dye your eggs.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I PAY FOR EGGS?
During Easter time, just about every store will price a Dozen Eggs to $.99 or less. So watch for those deals or ads that come in your mail or Sunday Paper. If your store doesn’t have their eggs marked down, you may want to Price Match!

We are going to do the Kool Aid thing this year, but we are going to crack the hard boiled eggs BEFORE we dye them, and you’ll see the color on the egg when you peel it!

Super fun idea!

I’ve always heard you should put salt in the water when you boil eggs. I do the same when I make pasta. However, I never knew to let them come to room temp BEFORE boiling. &, STEP 4 is all knew to me. Thanks!!
I wonder if the eggs will pick up the Kool -Aid flavor on Susan’s idea? I agree, KOOL plan!!
Talina
This is totally geeky but here’s the explanation for why you add salt. Water boils at approximately 100 degrees celsius. But salt water boils at a slightly higher temperature (depends on how much salt you add) so when you boil something in salt water, you are cooking it at a higher temperature than normal water so it cooks them faster (plus adds some flavor when it comes to things like pasta). So you can add salt or not, depending on the directions. It’ll just affect cooking times by a bit and sometimes affect flavor, depending on what you are cooking 🙂
Leigh
WOW!! So cool!! Isn’t there also something about pasta not sticking or being sticky?

This is my first year attempting to dye the eggs and I will be using this Kool-Aid idea. Do you need to add anything to the water besides the kool-aid? I thought I read somewhere about adding vinegar. Also, this may be a silly question but is it possible to dye the eggs without them being boiled and just use them later to make scrambled eggs?
Melea Johnson
Nope, no vinegar and no sugar added. Just the color from the packet. Yeah, I don’t see why you couldn’t do that! Just be super careful, because if they crack, they are done. 🙂

I’m wondering how much water you need to add to each kool-aid package and how many eggs will one package do?
