FREE and Cheap Summer Activities For You and Your Kids!

Summer isn’t over yet and I know you are trying to find affordable ways to keep your kids occupied.  Plus, you don’t want to break the bank!  So feel free to watch the video below of me talking about some of my favorite FREE and Cheap Summer Activities on Good Things Utah.  And you can read specific details about even more of them below.

Here is a list of affordable and FREE Summer Family Activities:

FREE Home Depot Kids Workshops:  These aren’t just a Summer activity because they go all year round. But these fun kids workshops are free and the kids just love them!  You will want to make sure you register ahead of time because spots fill up fast. Your kids will get to build fun things like Birdhouses and Mini Riding Lawnmowers. These classes are the first Saturday of every month.  You will want to sign up for the FREE Home Depot Kids Workshops as soon as the registration opens up.

FREE Bowling for Your Kids: Starting as early as May 1st, you can register your children on the KidsBowlFree Website.

Participating bowling centers around the country will let kids play 2 Free games each and every day through the summer.  Each bowling center will have their own age limits and shoe rental information.  Some will require a shoe rental purchase. However, the games are completely free!

And, if you have members of your family that are above the age limit, you can puchase a Family Pass.  The Family Pass will get you 2 Games per day for up to 4 adult members for only $24.95.  That price is for the whole summer!

Kids Skate Free: This Summer, select skating rinks across the Country offer FREE Skating for Kids!  Ages do depend on the actual location.  So head over to the Kids Skate Free site and pick your state.  Then, you can see the skating centers that are participating in your area.

$1 movies at Cinemark

Cinemark Summer Movie Pass: Participating Cinemark Theaters across the country will be offering a Summer Movie Pass.  Each movie is rated G or PG and is suitable for kids of all ages.  You can pay $1.00 for each show you attend.  Or, purchase a Pass (with 10 Movies) for only $5.00!  That’s $.50 a movie!

$1.00 Kid’s Movies at Megaplex Theaters: This summer Megaplex Theaters are offering a Kids Summer Movies Program. You can purchase a punch card to see 10 movies for only $10.00! Punch cards are available for purchase at the guest services desk or online. All the movies will be playing at 10:00am sometime during the week (each theater is different).

Barnes and Noble FREE Summer Reading Program:  Barnes and Noble is offering a Fun Summer Reading Program for ages 6- 12. All they have to do is read 8 books and Barnes and Noble will give them a book for Free!

Another thing you will want to do is search the Internet for FREE or cheap Factory Tours in your area.  You might be surprised what you find near you!

Looking for a way to help motivate your kids to read this summer? Have them participate in the FREE Pottery Barn Kids Summer Reading Challenge!

Pottery Barn Kids has two lists of Summer Reading Challenge Books on their site, have your child read 8 books from either list by July 31st and they will receive a FREE book at participating Pottery Barn Kids stores.

This challenge is perfect for both independent readers and those readers who still need a little help as the lists are split into a two different categories, one for younger kids and one for older kids.

  4. Sweet’s Candy Factory (near the Salt Lake airport) give free factory tours. My kids have loved going there–free samples available. Plus a fun retail store with dozens of flavors of salt water taffy.

  5. We did the Mrs. Cavanaughs chocolate factory tour last summer!! Its a good one! You get a small piece of chocolate at the end of the tour and it smells really yummy inside. They do have a movie they make you watch and its kinda long. My kids got bored real fast. I thought it was interesting though!

  7. Have you ever heard of the Play Unplugged program? It is another really free/cheap summer program. There are hundreds of activities and ideas and for each one you do you can earn a little badge. My boys think it is amazing and it spans from St. George to the borders of Idaho and Wyoming.
